VOLUNTEER

National Volunteer Week is April 19 through 25

Reading to a child. Doing yard work for an elderly person. Stocking shelves at a food bank. Sorting donations. All of these simple acts make a big difference. That's what happens when you lend your muscle to volunteer. We invite you to LIVE UNITED and spend some time volunteering. National Volunteer Week is April 19th through 25th and is a great time to start giving back.

Find a volunteer opportunity through United Way's Volunteer Center.

Youth Dance for the Cause
United Way of Pierce County's Youth Leadership Council held a Dance Friday, March 20th with proceeds benefiting the community. Dance United, held at Mount Tahoma High School, raised over $3,600 with nearly 700 teens in attendance. The money raised will be used by the Council to adopt families at Christmas and will also be invested in Community Solutions Fund. A food drive held in conjunction with the dance brought in 25 pounds of food. All donated items will be redistributed to Pierce County food banks through the Emergency Food Network.

Tocqueville Donors Get a Lesson in Housing

Tocqueville donors, our most generous supporters, got an in-depth look at how United Way of Pierce County is tackling the difficult issue of housing. In Pierce County, there is a shortage of affordable housing for families hoping to get out of the cycle of poverty.  The price of homes outpaces incomes and  is preventing home ownership for many.

Passionate testimonials from Anita Paige, a client of Washington Women's Education & Employment, and Cheryl Jones, advocacy champion, from Hilltop's Phoenix Housing helped tell the story.

United Way Partners to Decrease Homelessness
A broad public-private partnership including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, local municipalities and United Way of Pierce County have launched an ambitious new partnership to decrease homelessness by 50 percent over the next 10 years.

In March, Governor Chris Gregoire, the executives of King, Pierce and Snohomish counties, the Gates Foundation and Building Changes jointly launched the initiative that will expand an existing program called the Washington Families Fund.

Many local agencies, including United Way are working to get homeless families off the streets and into affordable housing.  The partnership with Washington Families Fund will coordinate those efforts in a quest to make sure more people have a safe place to call home.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has granted up to $60 million for the effort over 10 years.  Additional financial support has been pledged by Boeing, the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation, the Ben B. Cheney Foundation and many others.
