Lost Your Job? Need Help?
Where to Turn in Tough Times
In this struggling economy, you may have found yourself among the many in our community facing the loss of a job and financial trouble. United Way of Pierce County wants to connect you with organizations that can help.

Call 2-1-1
United Way of Pierce County's 2-1-1 call center is a comprehensive information warehouse that connects people with essential health and human resources. In 2008, 2-1-1 helped 62,517 callers receive assistance with counseling, health care, housing and shelter and much more. Find out more.

Tax Help Available to Low Income Families
United Way 2-1-1 is partnering with Pierce County Asset Building Coalition to provide tax help for low-income families. Volunteers will help prepare client taxes, determine if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and find other credits to boost their bottom line.

Saturday, February 7th is Super Refund Saturday! KeyBank representatives will be available to open accounts so clients can make a direct deposit of their refunds. They will also supply free check cashing vouchers for those who do not have a bank account and choose to get a paper check from the IRS.

Locations are South Sound Outreach, 1106 MLK, Jr Way and the Family Investment Center at Tacoma Housing Authority, 1728 E. 44th Street.

Youth Honor Martin Luther King with Community Service
Saturday, January 17th more than 100 youth volunteers came together to make a difference in our community and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth came from across the county and served at six project sites in the area. Students lent their muscle to environmental restoration work with Puget Creek Restoration Society, Snake Lake Nature Center and Cascade Land Conservancy. They also served at the America Red Cross, Tacoma Art Museum and a construction site with Habitat for Humanity.

Giving Back
Despite a tough economy, the generosity of our community was evident during this year's Season of Caring. Nearly 1400 individuals, including 150 families and many homeless teens, were sponsored and donations valued at $37,430 were received. In addition, Season of Caring provided gifts and toys to Catholic Community Services' Hospitality Kitchen for their Christmas Eve giveaway.  This allowed them to provide toys to children whose families were either homeless or living in transitional housing.

Nearly 80 organizations and groups participated in Season of Caring as well as 45 individuals and families.  Legacy sponsors DaVita and Intel each had seven teams from their organizations participate.  Both companies have participated in Season of Caring for the last five years or longer.
