2008 Day of Caring

More than 1,100 Volunteers Lend Their Muscle to Day of Caring

More than 1,100 volunteers participated in United Way of Pierce County's 2008 Day of Caring, Friday September 19th.  The community-wide volunteer event mobilizes teams of volunteers from organizations throughout Pierce County to complete service projects on one day.

The group included a team of nearly 500 students, staff and faculty from the Tacoma School of the Arts as well as teams from 35 companies throughout the area.

The Day of Caring event allows volunteers to lend their muscle to local organizations to build a stronger community.  By volunteering for Day of Caring, team members learn more about their community and how volunteering can make a positive impact on the issues affecting our community.

Rick Allen, Consortium Honored for Early Learning Work

The Children's Museum of Tacoma honored UWPC President Rick Allen at its annual Power of Play Lunch. Allen received the Museum's first "Great Friend to Kids" Award for his work in helping create the Pierce County Early Learning Consortium. The award recognizes individuals and organizations with ties to the Pierce County region who have made outstanding contributions to enriching the lives of children and supporting the power of play.

In 2007, United Way collaborated with a team of local partners to tackle the issue of early learning and the Consortium was born.  To date, they have not only developed a business plan to get kids ready to learn but have also secured financial support and established testing criteria to help gage progress.

Welcome Loaned Executives!
Every year organizations throughout our community lend their best and brightest employees to United Way of Pierce County.  For sixteen weeks, these Loaned Executives work as full-time ambassadors during the annual fundraising campaign.  We'd like to introduce you to the Loaned Executive Class of 2008.

Monthly Service Projects Help Youth LIVE UNITED
Youth United offers projects for youth to make a difference in their community. Whether it's reading to children, shelving food in a food bank or doing environmental restoration, there are monthly volunteer opportunities available through Youth United. These projects rotate throughout the county to allow youth from all areas to serve.

For upcoming events, check out our Youth United Activity Calendar and contact Bethany Opstedal to sign up to participate.

Pierce County Feels Economic Pinch
High gas prices. High food prices. A sign of the times.  As the economic conditions worsen, we all feel the pinch in our budgets.  But for those who were already struggling, this type of economy can be devastating.

United Way's 2-1-1 call center sees first hand how the economy is affecting Pierce County. In August, 2-1-1 received more than 5,200 calls for assistance, many from first-time callers.  What's even more alarming is that most callers have multiple needs.  They need assistance with rent, utilities and food.

Despite economic conditions, there is a solution: reach out a hand to one, and influence the condition of all. Whether you give money or items, advocate by lending your voice to champion a cause, or volunteer your time, you will changes lives through your generosity. Please continue to think of "we" before "me". Please continue to LIVE UNITED.
