| LIVE UNITED
Give.Advocate.Volunteer. |
| Underneath everything we are, underneath everything we do, we are all people. Connected, interdependent, united. And when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all.
LIVE UNITED. You've heard the phrase, you've seen the T-shirts - but what does it all mean? The recently launched LIVE UNITED brand puts a framework around how we, as a community, can realize our hopes and dreams for Pierce County.
Whether you give your time as a volunteer, your vote or your voice as an advocate on issues you care about, or your financial gifts as a donor (or all three), you make a difference.
It takes everyone in the community working together to create a brighter future. Together, we can accomplish more than any single group can on its own.
We invite you to be part of the change. Together, united, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow.
That's what it means to LIVE UNITED.

Sharing what you've learned on the campaign trail |
| The JCPenney Support Center in Sumner raised over $13,000 in special events during their latest campaign. How did they do it? Manager involvement! JCPenney hosted two special events using support from management to lure participants.
1) Auction Off a Manager: JCPenney coordinators organized a live auction where employees were able to bid to have their manager work alongside them for two hours.
2) Send a Manager to Jail: Employees paid $10 to put their manager in the "United Way Jail" for 30 minutes. Talk about sacrifices!
Speaking of auctions, JCPenney also hosts two auctions per year at which slightly damaged store items can be purchased by employees. These events raised over $11,000.
Thank you, JCPenney Sumner for all of your creativity and style! |

Time/Talent/Treasure - so many ways to give
We treasure your treasure through Gifts in Kind |
| Summer....is that you?
As you're making summer plans, why not build in some time to clean out your closet and donate items you no longer need to UWPC's Gifts in Kind program!
Gifts in Kind provides a wonderful opportunity to donate your new and gently used treasures. We receive a wide range of donations, from office furniture and supplies to toys and clothing, given by generous individuals and local businesses. These donations are distributed to about 100 area nonprofit organizations. We coordinate pick up of your item, you receive a tax deduction, and someone in need receives the item - it's a win-win-win.
In 2007, the Gifts in Kind program received just shy of $1 million in donations. Please spread the word to your coworkers about this great and easy way to give back to the community!

| We Hear You |
Huge thanks to the 34% of you who responded to the latest UWPC coordinator survey! Among many other things, you let us know that when it comes to your campaigns, the economy is the single biggest external challenge, and the most positive influence is the scope of UWPC's investment decisions.
We received some great feedback that will truly help us work with you in the future. If you would like more information about specific results, please contact Carol Young at 253.272.4264 or caroly@uwpc.org. |

Charity Navigator awards UWPC four-star rating |
United Way of Pierce County has received a four-star rating for three consecutive years from Charity Navigator.
Charity Navigator is an independent charity evaluator which evaluates the financial health of over 5,300 of America's largest charities.
According to Charity Navigator, "Only 9% of the charities we've rated have received three consecutive four-star evaluations, indicating UWPC outperforms most charities in America."
Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that United Way "excels, as compared to other charities in America, in successfully managing the finances of your organization in an efficient and effective manner." |

Electrifying Thought
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

S.O.S. Students Out Of Supplies
Back to school is cool - but not if you don't have the supplies necessary to succeed. Many kids in Pierce County depend on us to help them with backpacks, pencils, paper and other necessities. The Back-to-School program gives us four easy ways to get involved:
1) Sponsor a child
2) Build a backpack
3) Hold a supply drive

Spotlight
Highlighting a UWPC coordinator or team member
Valerie Smith, DaVita
Valerie Smith's passion for community issues shines brightly at her workplace. A former Loaned Executive with UWPC, Smith has now reversed roles, serving as the coordinator for the ever-impressive DaVita campaign.
Smith consistently finds creative ways to deliver United Way messages to DaVita's staff of 700 people.
For example, she organizes DaVita's annual Leadership Breakfast - an event at The Tacoma Club -recognizing those who give at or near the $500 level. She also helps coordinate DaVita's United Way kick-off breakfast, serving pancakes, eggs and bacon to employees. Juggling the logistics of the event, she hardly has time to eat herself!
We are very grateful for Smith's contributions to United Way - she has certainly made a difference at her workplace, and in the larger community. |
