Community Leaders Join United Way Board
United Way of Pierce County announced new board officers and board members at the Annual Meeting held May 2 at the Columbia Bank Building.
 
The 2008 board of directors officers include: Board Chair - Scott Winship, Vandeberg, Johnson & Gandara; Chair-Elect - Waylin McCurley, Rainier Pacific Bank; Secretary - Madlyn Murrey, Mary Bridge Children's Hospital; and Treasurer - Donna Haynes, Pilkey-Hopping & Ekberg, Inc.
 
New board members include:  Donna Albers, Albers & Company; Lawyer Davis, State Farm Insurance; Lynne Griffith, Pierce Transit; and Dianna Kielian, Franciscan Health System.
 
 




Kids Marathon a Success 

More than 80 kids lined the streets of Tacoma May 10th to participate in the first-ever Kids Marathon.  The kids who completed 25 "miles" of kind deeds, learning and exercise earned the final component of their "marathon" by completing the 1.2 mile run.  Read More





Breakfast Honors Busy Retirees, Seniors for Volunteer Work
United Way hosted the annual Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) volunteer breakfast May 7 at the Puyallup Fairgrounds Pavilion.  Jeff Rounce of the Business Examiner gave the keynote at the event honoring nearly 400 RSVP volunteers. Over 700 active volunteers accrued 122,789 hours of service at a value of almost $2.4 million dollars in the last nine months. Unique Program Awards 154 Varsity Letters in Community Service

More than 150 Pierce County students earned varsity letters in community service after tallying more than 39,000 hours of service during the year. Every Pierce County school district participated in the seventh year of this one-of-a-kind program where varsity letters, just like those given to athletes and musicians, are awarded for community service.  Read More





New Housing Helps Local Families
The United Way of Pierce County Housing Impact Action Team and the City of Tacoma Community Redevelopment Authority have awarded two more grants from the Housing Trust Fund Demonstration Project to help ease the housing crisis.
 
American Baptist Homes of the West's Salishan HOPE VI Development received a grant for the construction of a 55-unit apartment building for seniors. Tacoma Housing Authority's Salishan V and VI affordable housing projects also received an award to provide 180 units of multi-family and elderly housing. These projects represent another step to help increase the affordable housing available to families in our community.  Find our more
