OffBeat Magazine's Weekly Beat News From New Orleans and Louisiana
|

|
| OffBeat Publisher Jan Ramsey |
M0JO MOUTH I consider myself to be a very privileged individual to be able to have a job where I interact with the beautiful and talented musicians, photographers, writers and artists alive today. It's a dream job for someone who spent most of their "growing-up" time reading, listening to music, writing and drawing (according to my mama!).
Today I had a visit from one of my musical heroes, Harold Battiste, Jr., who is planning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his AFO Records, the label he created to celebrate New Orleans jazz and jazz musicians.

DEACON JOHN JOINS THE BEST OF THE BEAT
Here at OffBeat Central, the countdown is on for the Best of the Beat. This year, it's at Generations Hall on Friday, January 28, and we're pleased to announce that Deacon John is now a part of the event. He'll lead a tribute to our Lifetime Achievement in Music recipient Dave Bartholomew since Allen Toussaint, unfortunately, had a scheduling conflict come up that won't allow him to attend.
We're also looking forward to paying tribute to the late Alex Chilton at this year's Best of the Beat. His passing last year was recognized here in New Orleans primarily in private and low-profile events, and we're pleased that we can celebrate his career from the Box Tops to Big Star to his solo years with a band that includes Chilton alumni Doug Garrison and Rene Coman from the Iguanas, Alex McMurray, Dave Pirner, Susan Cowsill, Theresa Andersson, Davis Rogan and the Lost Bayou Ramblers' Louis Michot.
This year's talent also includes Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Red Bull Street Kings winners the Stooges Brass Band, Lyrikill and the Soundclash Allstars, Grammy nominee Chubby Carrier, Davis Rogan, the Creole String Beans, Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns and Washboard Rodeo. Be there for their performances, recognition of our honorees - Bartholomew, Derrick Tabb and the Roots of Music, HBO's Treme and Johnny Palazzotto - and the announcement of the winners of this year's Best of the Beat Awards. Tickets are on sale now for $29 ($39 at the door); VIP balcony packages are also available for $100.
Reflections on Alex Chilton.

NETWORKING TIME
The Jazz Education Network's annual conference started yesterday, with thousands of jazz educators from around the world in town for a series of performances, workshops, talks on panels on jazz education and jazz music. The central location for the conference is the Roosevelt Hotel, where there will be a regular slate of jazz performances by local and national musicians, but there are also concerts at Snug Harbor including a female jazz vocalists' night Thursday night and the Dave Liebman Quartet Saturday night.

A MUSICAL PROSPECT
Prospect 1.5 continues to present cutting edge art in New Orleans with a new show, " Resounding," that opens Saturday at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery. Prospect 1.5 director Dan Cameron has curated a show of international artists dealing music's absence. What happens when its not there? Photographer Rhona Bitner, for example, shoots musically significant historical sites after the historymakers are gone. Also featured in the show is work by Fikret Atay (Turkey), Sean Duffy (Los Angeles), Tim Lee (Vancouver) and Ted Riederer (New York). The exhibition runs through February 1. A GOOD DAY
The Twitterverse suffered apoplexy last November when Girl Talk unexpectedly announced the release and downloadability of his new album, All Day.
The Illegal-Art.net site was so jammed with traffic that it slowed to molasses for those that could get in at all. On the album, Girl Talk (Gregg Gillis) doesn't vary from a concept that has served him well; he mashes up the history of pop, rock and hip-hop music into a dizzying, funny, subtly political mix set to arena rock-sized beats. Girl Talk returns to the House of Blues Monday and Tuesday, and the show delivers the album's music along with the genuine spectacle of a stageful of fans and dancers so enthusiastic that, last time he played there, he, his table and computers were almost knocked off the stage.
OffBeat.com's traffic has grown to the point where we almost had a shutdown last week, which precipitated an upgrade in our server capacity, so hopefully we'll have mo' and bettah news to entertain you with in the future.
Have you checked out our News section lately to see the Video du Jour?

HOW TO MAKE MORE STORAGE SPACE: CREATIVE CLOSET SOLUTIONS
Maximizing closet space is a must-tackle challenge for all but the luckiest apartment dwellers. For the rest, finding clever ways to pack a lifetime of belongings into 28 cubic feet of space is a necessity. (If you don't want to end up on one of those "Hoarders" TV shows, that is.) Happily, in these modern times there are loads of affordable space-saving gadgets and storage containers that can help you get organized in a flash. Organizing your ShoesThough a very famous character from a glamorous NYC show dismissed closet shoe organizers as unthinkably tasteless, real ladies should think twice before thumbing their noses at these handy space savers. Amazon.com, Kmart, Target, and other such retailers sell a variety of types of shoe organizers. Certain varieties are meant to be suspended from a hanging rod, like the kind in your average closet, while others are designed to hang from a door or sit on the floor. For maximum space saving, the shoe organizers that hang from a door are best. These contraptions hold anywhere from 10 to 30 pairs of shoes and most cost around $20, though there are many overly fancy varieties that cost upwards of $50. Continue Reading on the 1st Lake Apartments Blog.
