Commencement Week Approaches

Diploma

The anticipation grows as Commencement week approaches and the excitement around campus has begun to flourish. As all alums know, graduation is bittersweet for both seniors and the underclassmen. Seniors look forward to their new life as college students, while at the same time know they will miss their classmates at Wayland. The senior's presence on campus will definitely be missed by their classmates as well as the faculty and staff at the Academy.

The 2011 Commencement is on Sunday, May 22, at 11 a.m. in Lindsay Gymnasium. To all of Wayland's seniors, we hope your years at the Academy have been memorable and that you will return for reunions as well as attend special events that the Academy hosts around the country and in some cases, around the world. Best of luck to all of you!

Spring Gala & Auction

The 35th Annual Spring Gala & Auction was a beautiful and brilliant success that helped raise money to update campus technology. Wayland would like to thank the parent volunteers that helped with so many aspects of the auction, which included solicitation and set-up, all auction donors (click here for a complete list) and of course all the attendees that "Bid High and Bid Often!"

As Trustee Chair, Susan Peterson `63 stated, "The new location in Lindsay Gymnasium made it a stunner - with the curtains all around and the gauzy, lit garlands up above - not to mention the four pillars on the stage. There were raves about the food, of course and all the items in the silent and live auctions. Beautifully executed!"

I still live in Australia and have five children, 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. My classmate Laura Mae (Baddaker) Kee Wade `46 has been here to visit twice through the years and I often see her when I visit the States. My son Tom McCann is a Director with Staples and lives in Holliston, Massachusetts (near Boston). My sister Ann Jamieson `48 lives in Los Lunas, New Mexico. The last time I came to Wayland was for Homecoming in 1996, my 50th year graduation anniversary.

Other family member(s) who have attended Wayland Academy: Sister - Ann Fisher Jamieson `48

Current Occupation: Retired

Currently, I am organizing the annual commemoration service for the battle of the Coral Sea, May 1942. This battle saved Australia from the threat of invasion and was the first major step in halting the Japanese advance in the Pacific. The Allied Task Force of two heavy carriers - the USS Lexington and the USS Yorktown - 8 cruisers, 13 destroyers and 3 other ships included HMAS Australia and HMAS Hobart. The USS Lexington was badly damaged and finally abandoned and sunk by her sister ship, the USS Phelps. The battle was fought in heavy cyclonic conditions that the opposing fleets never sighted each other, the action being conducted from the air. I arrange this commemoration each year for the Australian-American Association, which is a very active organization here in Australia. Our main guest this year is the U.S. Ambassador to Australia Mr Jeffrey Bleich and his family.

Work History: I worked at Northwestern in a developmental psychology lab from 2008-09. I ran participants and helped to design psychological studies and I substitute taught from 2009-10.

Favorite things about Wayland: I came to Wayland when I was 13, and I was a mess. I was sad, sulky, and accustomed to pretend to be someone I was not. My old school had stripped the curiosity from my brain and I felt robbed of a piece of my identity. I appreciate Wayland for helping me to rebuild intellectually and for teaching me the value of being myself. I really love Wayland for allowing people to be who they are.
