In the fall of 2010, Dr. Keely Lake, Latin teacher at the Academy, took some of Wayland's Latin and Greek students to compete in the National Classical Etymology Competition, which is designed to test a student's ability to handle both Latin and Greek derivatives and their usage in the English language.

The results arrived in January 2011, and Wayland won first place. The Wayland Students who won medals were: Trenton McMaster `13, Esmé Barniskis `13, Charlotte Lange `11, David Rosas `11 and Rebekah Faust `11.

Twelve of the students who completed the exam also went to the Wisconsin Junior Classical League Convention, held in Madison at the end of January. The National Junior Classical League is an organization of middle school and high school students sponsored by the American Classical League. It is composed of local and state chapters and is the largest classical organization in the world today. Its purpose is to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity.

Wayland also won third place in the Spirit Contest, determined by cheers, door decoration, school shirts and costumes at general assemblies.
