8 Job Hunting Tips for This Economy
1. Be Flexible: View your skills objectively and look for those skills that can be applied in many areas and professions, instead of just stating, "This is what I do". Make sure you know what your transferrable skills are and maximize those on your resume.
2. Stay the course: Though the digital age has engulfed the old school ways of getting a job, don't overlook the traditional required career documents such as a concise and intriguing cover letter, a solid and accomplishment driven resume and a follow up email or thank you letter.
3. Brand yourself with career documents that provide continuity in format, font and tone. Carry this over into your professional social media presence on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.
4. Consider volunteering, especially if you are unemployed or want to make a significant career change. Strategic volunteering within organizations that can help your career will provide additional references, job experience and help your community as well!
5. Leverage ALL of your professional and personal contacts both online and offline. Don't be afraid to let people know that you are job hunting, changing careers or seeking a professional promotion. Job Boards are helpful; however, networking remains one of the best ways to find opportunities for employment today!
6. Be mindful of your online reputation and make sure you have a professional email and/or website address. Google your own name to see what is online in reference to your name in case you will need to clarify anything. Many recruiters google candidates, and you want to make sure you are not caught off guard in an interview. Remember that once something is online - it lasts forever.
7. Research and identify companies that you want to work for and that are a good fit for your skills and abilities. Educating yourself about companies where you would like to work increases your knowledge of the opportunities that exist for employment there. Additionally, if you are called for an interview, you are already prepared with insightful information.
8. Tailor your resume and cover letter to target the job(s) that you are seeking. Make sure your resume is achievement driven so that hiring managers can quickly see how you added value to previous organizations. They not only want to gauge how you could assist them with their organizational goals, but also how you have performed in the past. |
