8 Job Hunting Tips for This Economy

1. Be Flexible: View your skills objectively and look for those skills that can be applied in many areas and professions, instead of just stating, "This is what I do". Make sure you know what your transferrable skills are and maximize those on your resume.

2. Stay the course: Though the digital age has engulfed the old school ways of getting a job, don't overlook the traditional required career documents such as a concise and intriguing cover letter, a solid and accomplishment driven resume and a follow up email or thank you letter.

3. Brand yourself with career documents that provide continuity in format, font and tone. Carry this over into your professional social media presence on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

4. Consider volunteering, especially if you are unemployed or want to make a significant career change. Strategic volunteering within organizations that can help your career will provide additional references, job experience and help your community as well!

5. Leverage ALL of your professional and personal contacts both online and offline. Don't be afraid to let people know that you are job hunting, changing careers or seeking a professional promotion. Job Boards are helpful; however, networking remains one of the best ways to find opportunities for employment today!

6. Be mindful of your online reputation and make sure you have a professional email and/or website address. Google your own name to see what is online in reference to your name in case you will need to clarify anything. Many recruiters google candidates, and you want to make sure you are not caught off guard in an interview. Remember that once something is online - it lasts forever.

7. Research and identify companies that you want to work for and that are a good fit for your skills and abilities. Educating yourself about companies where you would like to work increases your knowledge of the opportunities that exist for employment there. Additionally, if you are called for an interview, you are already prepared with insightful information.

8. Tailor your resume and cover letter to target the job(s) that you are seeking. Make sure your resume is achievement driven so that hiring managers can quickly see how you added value to previous organizations. They not only want to gauge how you could assist them with their organizational goals, but also how you have performed in the past.

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE:

The Recruiter's Perspective:

Each month we will feature an interview with a company or professional that is prominent in the job and career searching field.

This month we welcome:

 Rodrigo Alcaine,

Account Manager/Business Development at Aerotek

Aerotek.com

I sat down with Alcaine several months ago to discuss what constitutes a great resume that gets noticed, gets referred and gets the candidate hired!

One of the most important elements of the resume, according to Alcaine, is the use of keywords. The keywords must relate to the job description and the resume must catch the eye immediately. For example, if the job that the candidate is seeking is in Account Finance - where in their resume is that experience stated? How is it relayed that the candidate has the capacity to do the job?  "We are looking for a Best Fit" states Alcaine.

When working with recruiters, Alcaine also shed light on the preferred types of resumes that they like to see. Chronological is the best format because there is "no searching" involved and it is the "easiest to show and enhance relevant experience" according to Alcaine.  Work history needs to show continuity and job hopping may set off red flags. Bullet points are also preferred as they '"cater to the audience easily", says Alcaine.

Busy managers do not have a lot of time to sort through resumes looking for what a candidate has accomplished. Recruiters are "trained to spend as little time as possible to read resumes" so they need to be "quick to read and tailored to the eye" says Alcaine. Out of 200 resumes received by recruiters, it is not uncommon for 150 of them to be not qualified. Resumes need to be marketable and attractive.

So how does a candidate set themselves apart? Having a resume that is not generic, that demonstrates qualifications and accomplishments, that targets the job description, and is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. According to Alcaine, "You can tell when a candidate has done their homework".
