Lake Oneida Syracuse NY, was the site of the Ramada Championship and the Bassmaster Elite series finale. Boyd Duckett, 2007 Bassmaster Classic Champion and six time Classic qualifier fished against the best anglers in the world to win it all, $100K, trophy & a coveted berth in the 2013 Classic. Boyd who was in 27th place on the first day shot to second place on day 2 holding that position until the final day where he pulled ahead of the leader Randy Howell to secure the win.

Boyd's company Duckett Fishing is the originator of the famous Micro Magic rods. These rods were among the first to bring micro guide designs to mainstream anglers. Boyd not only forged a path with micro guide rods but was the first to commission "micro guides" designed specifically for this style of rod. Prior to Micro Magic rods, every other rod company that offered a "micro guide" rod used stock guides borrowed from other niche markets.

Boyd came to the American Tackle Company with

specific performance, durability & design requirements for a guide that would excel in and withstand the harsh conditions of tournament bass fishing. Employing several details not previously utilized by guide manufacturers as well as some still not considered, American Tackle was able to develop the Artus Ring Lock guides and subsequent designs proprietary to Duckett Fishing. There is no doubt that Boyd won at Oneida using his Micro Magic rods.

A huge congratulations on a fantastic win and his new baby!  American Tackle thanks Boyd Duckett for allowing us to contribute to his rods.

American Tackle Pro Staff Member Nuno Paulino from Portugal
and his  AMSH1084-2

In this American Tackle Pro Staff project I used a blank and a guide set that i didn't know, the Matrix Steel Head

9 2 pc and the Ring Lock A- Frame guides. To complete the hardware I used an Aero-16 reel seat that its very comfortable to fish with.

Steel Head is something that we don't have in Portugal so after I made a few casts with the blank, I thought that this would be a very nice light saltwater Spinning rod. For the grip, I decided to make something different that revealed to be very comfortable. I used several eva half circles with trim rings in the middle to create a grip made with balls. Sounds strange, looks strange, but feels really well in the hand.

The graphic was very simple with an American flag and the Matrix and Pro Staff logos on it. Guide wraps made with grey, pearl and navy blue.

The recommended  lure wt for this blank is - 0z, perfect to use light baits to fish in harbors, piers or even on the beach trying to catch some Sea Bass, Mackerel and Needle fish. The fast action is perfect to animate small baits and easy to cast them.

First time I went fishing with this rod, I went to a pier to make some casts to understand the blank better and I have to say that it was love at first cast. It casts really easy and as I suspected the fast action makes it very easy to animate small baits.

As always when I try something new I like to abuse it a little and I fished with 1 oz bait. First with some care and after I gain confidence I pushed for this girl and she kept answering me with longer casts. When in combat the rod is very smooth and easy to use.

This Matrix Steel Head blank proves to be very versatile and I strongly recommend it to everyone that wants to have a fun light saltwater Spinning rod.
