MISBO 2012 Data Survey

In 2011, MISBO contracted with SOS and Jim Pugh to administer the MISBO Data Survey to collect a wide array of Independent & Private School Information. The survey included Salary & Benefits data, Tuition & Financial Aid information, and information about various school vendors.

You must participate to receive the data. Only 50 schools participated last year but we hope to have 200 schools participate this year to provide more valuable and useful data for everyone. Watch for more information and a schedule to complete the survey in June. This chart is just one example of hundreds that are available:

Contract for definite term vs. "at will"

The concept of employment for a definite period (September 01 of one year through August 31 of the following year) is exactly the opposite of the concept of employment "at will," which means the employment is for no definite term at all; it may be terminated at any time.  Therefore, it isn't logical to provide in a teacher's contract "The term of this contract is for one year, commencing on September 01, 2012 and expiring on August 31, 2013 and at the same time include a sentence that "employment is at will."  If the contract is for one year, it can't be at will.

If you want to reserve the right to terminate the contract sooner than the definite period specified in the contract (e.g., one year), then include a clause providing for early termination.  For example: "This contract is for one year, commencing on __ and expiring on __.  However, the school may terminate the contract earlier for the convenience of the school."

Perhaps this is more a verbal or conceptual distinction than a real one, but the fact remains that "at will" employment is incompatible with employment for a "definite term."

One other point that sometimes is misunderstood: "at will" or termination for "no reason" or "without cause" does not mean that the school can terminate a contract, or any employment relationship, for an illegal reason.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:

Zero-Based Budgeting

Dear Colleagues,

After reading the article Starting From Scratch in NACUBO's April 2012 Business Officer Magazine, I thought about the importance of the budgeting process for the Business Officers and all leaders of an independent school. The school's budget is the translation of the school's mission into the financial model that allows it to function. In my experience, the Business Officer is the person at the center of this process collecting the information, assisting with the multitude of decisions that need to be made and presenting this information to the Head of School and ultimately the Board of Trustees for approval.

Zero-based budgeting is a process where each person with line item responsibility annually determines the budget requirements from "scratch". This process is more time consuming than just adding a percentage to the current year's amounts but allows each person involved in the process to truly understand the value and importance of each dollar spent. When I implemented this budgeting process as a business officer, it helped our school redefine the culture of spending and accountability and led to a balanced budget for the first time in many years. Once everyone understood (and accepted) the process, the culture embraced the positive aspects and the school became more financially sound and sustainable.

We continue to operate in an environment where tuition increases each year are typically in excess of the current inflation rate. Sound business practice dictates that we must be responsible and accountable for each dollar we spend. Each dollar must be spent to further the school's mission. I encourage each of you to read this article and consider your current budget process.

Current_Issue/April_2012/Starting_from_Scratch.html

  • Is it inclusive and collaborative?
  • Do all programs add value and provide substance allowing you to articulate your school's unique value proposition?
  • Is the school's budget a true reflection of its mission?

If you answer YES - congratulations and keep up the good work! If you answered NO to any of these, consider taking a look at your budget process to ensure it is best serving your school's needs.

Thank you for the work that you do!

Sincerely,

Marc Levinson
