Letter from Interim Executive Director
Dear MISBO Members,
One of the greatest rewards I receive because of the work I do for MISBO and as part of my consulting practice is visiting and spending time at schools. Since leaving my school in Colorado, I miss the energy and the community that comes with working at a school. The service you perform every day is incredibly valuable to each child at your school - thank you!
I recently had the opportunity to visit and work with an international school in Beijing, China. It is amazing to me that I can be halfway around the world and feel right at home at a school in China. The school is dealing with many of the same challenges that you have every day:
- Complaints about the food service.
- Difficulty recruiting and retaining quality faculty and staff.
- How to implement an iPad program.
- How to provide professional development to support a 1:1 initiative.
- The variety of board committee reports and meetings.
I am able to learn from my experiences with these schools how to better serve MISBO members and I learn every day from one of you how to help other schools around the world.
Thank you again for the work you do. Your school, and especially your students, are better because of your hard work.
Sincerely,
Marc Levinson
Interim Executive Director, MISBO

NLRB Poster Rules Goes Into Effect April 30th
Effective April 30, 2012, private sector employers, including private schools (but see exemption for religious schools), will have to post a notice in the workplace advising employees of their rights under the National Labor Relations Act. This is so whether any of the schools' employees are represented by a labor organization or not. You can get all sorts of information about the poster, Q&As, copy of the notice, etc., @ https://www.nlrb.gov/poster. You can download the poster from that site and print it, or you can fill out a form available on the website or call 202-273-0064. All of this is free. Don't buy posters from a commercial source if you want them for free.
As a general proposition, the National Labor Relations Board, which enforces the NLRA, asserts jurisdiction over private sector employers in interstate commerce, including child care institutions, private and non-profit colleges, universities and other schools (if the school has a gross annual volume of business of $1 million or more).
However, there is an exemption for religious organizations. The Board will not assert jurisdiction over employees of a religious organization who are involved in effectuating the religious purpose of the organization, such as teachers in church-operated schools. The Board has asserted jurisdiction over employees who work in the operations of a religious organization that did not have a religious character, such as a health care institution.
