Taking road construction from business killer to business builder

At some point most businesses will be affected by infrastructure work. No one likes to navigate the challenging conditions road work and other projects bring, and when customers find it time consuming or difficult to reach a business, they often simply stop trying.

Having a proactive plan to minimize customer inconvenience during these times is an important step toward successfully combating the traditional business slump that accompanies infrastructure work.

Roger Kwapich, owner of Smitty's Automotive, center

When Roger Kwapich, owner of Smitty's Automotive, was faced with road construction hampering his customer traffic, he knew doing nothing was not an option. Kwapich built and executed a plan that not only preserved his business but also grew it!

Kwapich's plan was recently shared with Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce members as part of a TASBA Luncheon regarding the current wave of road construction projects facing the city.

Road work is not the only challenge customers and businesses may face and Kwapich's plan has applications for everyone, even if the orange barrels are not outside the doors.

Click here to visit the Chamber's webpage to watch Kwapich explain how he overcame these challenges.

Through this proactive approach, Kwapich ensured his customers were continuously aware of the project's progress and went to great lengths to make it easier for his customers to do business with him during the construction.

As a result, Smitty's not only survived the potential slowdown, but actually grew the business at a time when construction was negatively affecting traffic around the shop.
