Chamber Poised to Lead Community Effort to Retain the 180th Air National Guard
In 2005 the Chamber spearheaded a successful community effort to retain the 180th Air National Guard during that year's Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) round - and is standing ready to do so again.
2005 was the first time that the guard and reserves were considered in the BRAC process, which put the 180th ANG in consideration for possible closure or reduction in assets. When the BRAC closures were ultimately announced in late 2005, not only was the 180th ANG not on the closure list, but it also acquired a homeland security-related Air Sovereignty Alert mission. Today, aircraft at the base are on alert on the ramp 24/7 to protect the eastern half of the United States from threats to its security.
The Department of Defense, in response to proposed defense budget cuts for 2013, is prepared to have additional BRAC rounds in 2013 and/or 2015.
The 180th Air National Guard employs 430 full-time with an additional 1000 guard jobs and has a payroll of over $49 million. With a total economic impact of over $105 million, the 180th ANG is even more important to our local economy today than it was in 2005. The Chamber is prepared to once again lead a community-wide effort to retain the base.
Stay tuned for more information as this initiative develops!

Third Frontier Internship Program Provides Cash Reimbursements for Tech Internships
The Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce is once again working with the Third Frontier Internship Program to offer cash reimbursements to businesses that employ college students pursing degrees in high-tech fields. The program offers Ohio businesses up to $3000 in cash reimbursement for eligible internships they provide in the areas of Advanced Materials; Advanced Manufacturing; Advanced Energy; Biomedical; Instruments, Controls and Electronics; Advanced Propulsion; and Information Technology. The program will reimburse businesses for 50 percent of an intern's wage (up to $3,000) for a 12 month period. The Chamber is no stranger to the internship program - between 2004 and 2007, the Chamber assisted with the placement of more than 320 interns across northwest Ohio, which resulted in over $960,000 in reimbursements made to northwest Ohio companies.
Since 2004, the goal of the Ohio Third Frontier Internship Program has been to develop a pool of talented workers for Ohio's businesses and create enriching student work experiences. The program positions Ohio to develop and retain technologies in the state that require educated and skilled workers. Students in the program gain hands-on experiences related to their field of study, while companies supporting these internships are partially compensated for wages paid during an internship and, at the conclusion of the internship, often offer full-time employment to an individual who is well prepared for a future career within the organization.
To participate in the internship program, or for more information, please contact Charlene Page at 419-243-8191 or charlene.page@toledochamber.com.
