"A Psalm of Life"
By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Submitted by Mark Brockmeier
"Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait."

An excerpt from "December"
By Philip Conner
"There is a comfort as the daylight ends,
And a cold chill comes, riding on the wings
Of wild, winter winds as the moon ascends;
My heart remembers what December brings,
The fellowship of family and friends."

New Signup Process for Writing Works
| |
To the BU STH Community:
Holiday greetings from Writing Works! We have been working hard over the past few weeks to streamline the signup process for Writing Works and we are pleased to announce that we now have a new signup process in place so that you don't need to come by our office.
To sign up for hours with Maggie, please visit and login with your Kerberos password:
http://www.bu.edu/phpbin/signup/?event_id=55
To sign up for hours with Danielle, please visit and login with your Kerberos password:
http://www.bu.edu/phpbin/signup/?event_id=54
Please note that, in order to avoid students monopolizing the system, you are only able to sign up for a limited number of hours. You are also able to cancel your appointment on the website if needed.
We will be happy to work with you on developing and finessing your paper idea, and all members of the STH community are welcome to make use of our services. As a reminder, Writing Works is not intended for proofreading. Proofreading means a "surface reading"/quick reading of a paper especially looking for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors. Those students in need of proofreading should visit the Educational Resource Center (see www.bu.edu/erc for more information).
We look forward to working with you in the spring!
Sincerely,
Danielle & Maggie

UMC Young Adult applications due February 5, 2012
| |
For 60 years, The United Methodist Church's General Board of Global Ministries has been sending young people into service. Through the US-2 and mission intern programs, we have enriched the lives of thousands of young men and women, and through their witness touched uncountable youth, adults, and communities. The US-2 and mission intern programs develop church leaders, as young people work in communities that face issues such as poverty, racism, or environmental justice.
US-2s serve two years living out faith through social justice in the United States. They live, work, and make a positive impact working with a United Methodist partner organization, boldly reexamining their role and participation in society to address systemic injustice. Mission interns integrate the global and local by serving for three years, approximately half of the time in an international community and half in their home country. They respond to the prophetic voice of communities and individuals working for systemic change around the world, walking the path of justice, mercy, and love.
The deadline for the 2012 class of mission interns and US-2s is February 5. Please share the application with those in your networks and communities between the ages of 20 and 30 throughout our global connection, who are committed to addressing the root causes of injustice. The application is available here:
http://new.gbgm-umc.org/connections/youth/applications/
Mission interns and US-2s are encouraged to engage in disciplined theological reflection and are equipped to discern God's calling for their lives. Thank you for partnering with us in shaping ethical, prophetic Christian leaders who are engaged firsthand in God's mission in a world of injustice and need.
In mission and ministry together,
Thomas G. Kemper

The Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs is a center for research, publication, and education on one of the most important questions in the contemporary world: How does culture affect economic and political developments world-wide? Specifically, how does religion impact international affairs? Since its inception in 1985, CURA has sought to discover, trace, and analyze the connection between culture, economics, politics, and globalization. We have conducted research projects on every continent except Australia, and these projects have resulted in publications that have become major points of reference on their topics. In a dynamic and modernizing world, CURA's ultimate agenda is to further global understanding and communication.
