Great God did as he saw fit,
By justice of autumn's fine array.
So before the dark smog covers it,
I think I should go out and play.

New Episcopal Chaplain a Role Model
Cameron Partridge, first openly transgendered chaplain
| |
by Rich Barlow (BU Today)
You probably aren't aware that November 20 is the national Transgender Day of Remembrance. Cameron Partridge is. The observance began after the 1998 murder of a transgendered Boston woman. November 20 also happens to be Partridge's birthday (he turns 38 this year), and BU's new Episcopal minister, the University's first openly transgendered chaplain, once shuddered at a birthday that reminded him both about his own mortality "and that you could be killed."

Finding a Tutor Just Got Easier New software system arranges academic help online
| |
by Rich Barlow (BU Today)
As a tutor at the Educational Resource Center (ERC), which pairs students needing academic or writing assistance with peers who can help, Hannah Letbetter recalls that in the past, she had to go through a logistical rigmarole.
Her tutees had to hoof it up four flights of stairs in the George Sherman Union to the ERC, where they filled out a form specifying the courses they needed help with, the kind of help, and the times they could meet with Letbetter (SAR'12) and other tutors. ERC staffers then reviewed the form and contacted tutors to match them up. All of this consumed time, while felling trees for the necessary paper. Reed more

Through My Eyes - Trailer
|
The church is at war over homosexuality. Will our youth be the casualties?
Through My Eyes provides an unflinchingly honest look at the role of today's young Christians in the gay debate: what they really think, how they perceive the church, and what they wish other Christians knew.
Over two dozen young Christians agreed to share their private feelings, struggles, and experiences on camera. All of them have a personal stake in the debate. And all of them hoped that their stories might make a difference.
Created for Christians by Christians, Through My Eyes tackles one of the most controversial topics today with compassion and sensitivity, shining new light on the debate for people on both sides. More information on the film here: http://www.throughmyeyesdvd.com/
Pizza and drinks will be served!

- The African American Studies Fall 2011 Lectures and Special Events
- Monthly News and Events from the Schools of the Boston Theological Institute
The Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs is a center for research, publication, and education on one of the most important questions in the contemporary world: How does culture affect economic and political developments world-wide? Specifically, how does religion impact international affairs? Since its inception in 1985, CURA has sought to discover, trace, and analyze the connection between culture, economics, politics, and globalization. We have conducted research projects on every continent except Australia, and these projects have resulted in publications that have become major points of reference on their topics. In a dynamic and modernizing world, CURA's ultimate agenda is to further global understanding and communication. 2011 - 2012 Muslim Women and the Challenge of Authority Lecture Series to be held at the Boston University Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs in Brookline, MA. This series brings sustained attention to negotiations over authority in a range of times and places. Speakers will address Muslim women's own authority-to write and interpret texts, to structure their own spiritual lives, to manage wealth and make marital choices-and the authority wielded by husbands and kin, governments, religious leaders, and normative texts.
