Nine Cars Burned in Allston
BU student latest arson victim
(BU Today)

By Art Jahnke

On Saturday night, Ryan Piccirillo parked his 1995 black Ford Ranger in the driveway next to his apartment at 20 Highgate St. in Allston. On Sunday morning, it was a mess of smoldering upholstery and broken glass.

Piccirillo (COM'12) says one of his housemates, Laura Brubaker (COM'14), woke him up. "She was banging on my door, saying my car was on fire. I ran outside to see small flames. I opened up the passenger side door and the flames immediately grew, maybe 8 to 10 feet. The glass windows then shattered because of the heat. It was all pretty scary."

Writing Works Office Memo

Hello from your friendly writing tutors! As the semester progresses, we are discovering there is some confusion about what the writing tutors at STH do. To provide some help and clarity, we are offering the following guidelines for how to use our services.

Please remember that anyone is welcome to come to our office. We are always excited to meet with students and talk about writing with them!

Guidelines for use of the Writing Tutor:

We will gladly:

1. Discuss paper topics.

2. Help you formulate an outline that accomplishes the goals of your paper.

3. Read through papers for gaps in your argument.

4. Read isolated portions of your paper (i.e. a paragraph, a thesis statement) to make sure they convey what you mean to say as powerfully as possible.

5. Provide support as you move through the writing process. (This includes help with writer's block, lack of confidence in your writing, and clarity about the art of academic writing.)

We will be unable to:

1. Proofread papers.

2. Accommodate requests for changes in appointment times outside our regular office hours.

3. Read papers outside of our regular office hours.

4. Offer guidance on the basics of English grammar and spelling.

Sincerely,
Danielle & Maggie

Harvard Divinity School

Dear Friends,

We are pleased to invite you to enroll in one of several workshops taking place from January 4-20, 2012 on the HDS campus, as part of HDS J-Term . These workshops are offered to alumni and students, and many are being facilitated by HDS graduates. Workshops are 1-2 days in length, and cost $30 each. You are invited to register online (as space allows).

Consider joining Professor Dan McKanan for "Ethical Eating: Social and Ecological Perspectives on Food and Food Production"; Karen Harris, MDiv '04 for "Yoga and the Art of Ministry"; Jeremy Smith, MTS '03, MBA '05 for "Strategic Planning for Nonprofit and Faith-Based Leaders" - and these are but a sampling of the offerings and presenters.

Starting in 2009-2010, when Harvard adjusted the academic calendar, a three-week January Term (or J-Term) was created in the time between New Year's Day and the start of the spring semester. Each graduate school has used this time differently. At HDS, it has become a time for non-credit workshops and other forms of non-classroom instruction to take place.

This is an exciting opportunity for alumni to connect with students and with campus, and we hope that you will consider joining us.

Sincerely,

Julia Whitcavitch-Devoy, MTS '94
Alumni Representative for Enrichment

HDS Alumni/Alumnae Council

Maritza S. Hernandez, EdM '05
Associate Dean for Development and Student Services
Community Representative, HDS Alumni/Alumnae Council

Job Opportunity

Wilmington United Methodist Church, Wilmington, MA is looking for a part time Christian Educator and Pastor's Assistant.

Wilmington United Methodist is 15 minutes north of Boston and the church is a 1/2 mile from a Commuter Rail (T) Stop.  We are a growing and active congregation, with over 100 children in our dynamic Sunday School program. Therefore, children and youth are integrated into all aspects of our ministry, including regularly leading worship.

We are looking for someone to continue to grow our education ministry for adults and children, and to assist the pastor with visitation and leading worship. We are looking for someone who is creative, open, and who works well with other members of a staff and with volunteers. We would prefer a Deacon, but are open to anyone who has a back ground in educational ministries.

For more information or to apply for the position, please contact: Rev. Travis Bonnette-Kim at wucmpastor@verizon.net or (978) 658-4519.

The Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs is a center for research, publication, and education on one of the most important questions in the contemporary world: How does culture affect economic and political developments world-wide? Specifically, how does religion impact international affairs? Since its inception in 1985, CURA has sought to discover, trace, and analyze the connection between culture, economics, politics, and globalization. We have conducted research projects on every continent except Australia, and these projects have resulted in publications that have become major points of reference on their topics. In a dynamic and modernizing world, CURA's ultimate agenda is to further global understanding and communication.

2011 - 2012 Muslim Women and the Challenge of Authority Lecture Series
to be held at the Boston University Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs in Brookline, MA.

This series brings sustained attention to negotiations over authority in a range of times and places. Speakers will address Muslim women's own authority-to write and interpret texts, to structure their own spiritual lives, to manage wealth and make marital choices-and the authority wielded by husbands and kin, governments, religious leaders, and normative texts.
