VOLUNTEERS NEEDED PLEASE!

July 1st Canada Day Celebrations

Join us to celebrate Canada Day as we host a puppet making tent for the City of Calgary. Potentially 2,000 young people will make their own folded paper bird! We'll encourage real bird observation by showing pictures of Alberta birds, we'll suggest dramatization with jokes and songs. In the evening we'll switch up the activity to glowing idea paper bag puppets. It'll be lots of fun.

(Special thanks to Teresa Ryan for managing this project)

Call for proposals

GET SOME PUPPET POWER WORKING FOR YOU!

A significant component of the Puppet Power 2013 conference will use the expertise of our visiting speakers to create a "Rapid Idea Generation" panel. The panel will brainstorm a pre-selected organization's proposal in order to demonstrate how artists and a community organization can create an exciting puppet project.

If you represent a Calgary based Not-for-Profit or Non-Governmental Organization that could benefit from being the demonstration case for this exercise, then click on  Call for Proposals for more information about this exciting opportunity or click on Submit RIG Proposal to fill out an on-line project submission form.

"It was refreshing to witness a performance (Pigs in a Canoe) that was rich in poetry, history and storytelling."

WPTS is at Calgary's Timeraiser event. June 14

The Timeraiser is part volunteer fair, part silent art auction and part night on the town. The big twist is rather than bid money, you bid volunteer hours.

Pigs in a Canoe postcard frontWhat a fun event! Pigs in a Canoe and other Watery stories performed at the Northeast Children's Festival in Saskatchewan in early June. Pigs... requires a child to step forward to tell a joke. What kind of jokes do they tell in Tisdale?

How does a cat ask to go out? Meout, Meout!

Wendy attended the TEDx event in late May at TELUS Spark presented by TEDx YYC.  An inspiring time - my favourite speakers?

Dr. Arpad Vass, Research Scientist with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Spoke about Forensic science and human decomposition. The haunting sound of decomposition, is there a puppet show application?

Moeed Ahmad, Head of New Media at Al Jazeera, his video footage of Arab Spring. Again haunting but also reminding me of my time in Egypt.

Dr. Charlene Elliott, Canada Research Chair of Food Marketing, Policy and Health, University of Calgary, spoke on her research on the complex nature of children's food marketing, I will never go down the cereal aisle with the same innocence.
