Greetings!
This past spring I was invited to contribute to a book being written to provide a unique one-of-a-kind resource for people with ADHD and to increase the awareness of ADHD worldwide.
I am pleased to announce that the book is being released October 11th in celebration of ADHD Awareness Week, 2011.  Please read below about both of these exciting events.
     Best wishes,

ADHD Awareness Week
ADHD Awareness Week 2011

The week of October 16th through October 22nd marks the celebration of ADHD Awareness Week. During this week we hope to raise awareness about ADD/ADHD, as well as help as many people as we can who are affected by this disorder. We want to get the word out that ADHD is Real! Nearly every mainstream medical, psychological, and educational organization in the United States concluded long ago that Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a real, brain-based medical disorder.

It is time to remove the stigma and uncover the myths that have kept so many children and adults from receiving the care and understanding necessary to reach their full potential and be successful in their lives.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the formal name for this disorder, includes Attention Deficit Disorder both with and without hyperactivity. The abbreviations ADD, ADHD, AD/HD, and ADD/ADHD are all in use to refer to this disorder.

In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the percentage of children in the United States who have ever been diagnosed with ADHD is now 9.5%.

Poor parenting, family problems, too much TV, or excess sugar do NOT cause ADHD. Instead, research shows that ADHD is both highly genetic (with the majority of ADHD cases having a genetic component), and a brain-based disorder (with the symptoms of ADHD linked to many specific brain areas).

A lot has changed in the last twenty years, especially in just the last five years. New research has led to greater understanding of how to parent and how to self-manage ADHD, including, but certainly not limited to, tremendous advances in the medications available. There is tremendous hope and help available at every stage of life. You can visit http://www.adhdawarenessweek.org/ for a wealth of wonderful information.

The Wisdom of Steve Jobs Steven Jobs
By now most people have heard of the legacy of the Apple founder, Steve Jobs.  With his recent passing, so much has been written about his life, his passions, and his accomplishments.  I want to share with you one of his guiding principles that inspires me in my life and my work:

Focus and Simplicity

It's only by saying "no" that you can concentrate on the things that are really important. "The most important decisions you make are not the things you do, but the things you decide not to do.  Zero in on just a few things in which you can or need to succeed and aim your efforts there. Keep it simple."

New Resources added to website...

ReadWriteThink.org

Interactive learning activities for grades K-12. One of my favorites, Essay Map, is an interactive graphic organizer helps students develop an outline that includes an introductory statement, main ideas they want to discuss or describe, supporting details, and a conclusion that summarizes the main ideas. The finished map can be saved, e-mailed, or printed.

Collegeboard and ADHD

Students who receive accommodations through IEP's and 504 Plans are NOT guaranteed these same accommodations when it comes time to taking the SAT and AP exams.  It is best to begin early with your school staff to apply for accommodations for your child.  See the link above for valuable information.
