This Week's Community Read Events
Port Townsend Public Library

Archery Demonstration and Clinic

Have you ever wanted to shoot a bow and arrow? Now is your chance! The 2012 Port Townsend Community Read month-long event series is proud to offer members of the community a chance to learn about the true sport of kings: archery.

Join us Sunday, March 18, at 10 a.m. at the Port Townsend Fair Grounds, for an exciting view of the many opportunities the sport of archery has to offer. Certified National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) volunteers as well as competitive archery shooters will be on-hand to guide shooters of all ages through the history, process of successful shooting with archery tackle and future of archery.

After the instructional period, the public is welcome to pick up a bow graciously donated by the Wapiti Bowmen Archery club of Port Angeles, and put their newfound knowledge to the test.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon. The Port Townsend fairgrounds are located at 4907 Landes Street, Port Townsend.

Archery Elk Hunting Seminar

Archer, backpacker and avid hunter Jameson Hawn, will be presenting a free elk hunting seminar Saturday, March 17, at 5:30 p.m., as part of the 2012 Port Townsend Community Read month-long event series.

The event will take place in the newly renovated Library Learning Center next to the Port Townsend Public Library located at 1220 Lawrence Street, Port Townsend.

The free elk hunting seminar will focus on archery gear, methods for finding elk throughout the state, backpacking essentials as well as demonstrating how to get hunters within range for the shot of a lifetime.

"There's nothing like a big bull elk screaming bugles out in September," Hawn said. "It's something that not everyone gets to experience; I hope to show unique ways that have gotten me closer to big game species that might change others perspective oh hunting."

Whether you are an avid hunter, photographer, or a backpacker who hopes to get closer to elk in the woods, this event will offer advice tailored at getting you close.

Community Read events are based off the award-winning book "Winterkill," by Craig Lesley, and bring local authors, artists and outdoor enthusiasts together to breathe life into the books events.

Writer's Perspective

The Port Townsend Public Library is proud to host Winterkill: A Writer's Perspective, with local author and editor Adrianne Harun, on Wednesday, March 14 at 7 p.m.

Based on the award-winning 2012 Community Read book titled, "Winterkill," by Craig Lesley, the Perspective event offers a unique perspective into what makes Winterkill a truly fascinating book.

An accomplished author, Harun will incorporate 30 years of writing and 20 years of editing skills into a review of Winterkill, touching on how the book stands outside the typical realm of western novels.

"It is truly a genuine, authentic work," Harun said. It gives a new voice to westerns that draw readers from all venues.

Winterkill: A Writer's Perspective will be presented at the Port Townsend Public Libraries Learning Center on Wednesday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m. Following Harun's presentation will be a group discussion about Winterkill and all are invited to join.

Two Wolves Within: the Wolf in Native American Mythology

On March 16th, from 1:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m., the Library will be hosting a discussion on the 2012 Community Read, hosted by Jeanne Simmons and storyteller Brian Rohr.

The discussion will feature the importance of the wolf within Native American Mythology, particularly among tribes that subsisted by hunting, rather than agriculture. People of all ages from 10 and up are welcome to attend.

Brian Rohr is a local storyteller who is an active board member of the Mythsinger Foundation. He specializes in oral storytelling and studied under local mythology expert Daniel Deardorff. Jeanne Simmons is a member of the Port Townsend Library staff. She serves as a library assistant in the Youth Services department.

During the presentation and discussion, the Friends of the Port Townsend Library will be selling raffle tickets. The winner of the drawing, held on March 29th, will receive a Pendleton blanket decorated with a tribal turtle design.
