appleApple Looking To Patent Huge Glass Cylinder

Apple has filed a patent application seeking ownership of the design of the massive, elaborate glass cylinder that serves as the entrance to its megastore in Shanghai, China.

Apple Store ShanghaiThe store, which opened in mid-2010, is similar to Apple's landmark Fifth Avenue store in New York City, in that the entrance to the underground location is marked by a glass structure on the surface. But unlike the iconic cube found in New York, Apple's Shanghai store features a glass cylinder that is 12 meters tall.

The design of the structure is detailed in a newly published patent application discovered by AppleInsider, entitled "Glass Building Panel and Building Made Therefrom." The filing describes a number of curved glass panels arranged to form the cylindrical shape found with the final product.

abiArchitecture Billings Index Positive For The Fifth Straight Month

The commercial sector continues to lead the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) which has remained in positive territory for the fifth consecutive month. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the March ABI score was 50.4, following a mark of 51.0 in February. This score reflects a slight increase in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 56.6, down from mark of 63.4 the previous month.

"We are starting to hear more about improving conditions in the marketplace, with a greater sense of optimism that there will be greater demand for design services," said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA.  "But that is not across the board and there are still a number of architecture firms struggling so progress is likely to be measured in inches rather than miles for the next few months." leadingLeading Economists Say Recovery Is Underway

The recovery is underway. This was the general consensus among experts participating in a recent webinar that focused on the economy and the construction market. "We have seen a steep decline in nonresidential construction," said Kermit Baker, chief economist for the American Institute of Architects (AIA). "We seem to be at the beginning of a recovery now and the best indicator of that that we have is billing at architecture firms has been growing in recent months."

Baker was one of several leading economists who took a look at the nonresidential construction market and where it is headed during a webinar sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). The webinar, titled "A Construction Recovery at Last-but How Long and How Strong?," also featured Ken Simonson, chief economist for the AGC, and Bernard Markstein, chief economist for Reed Construction Data.

In making his predictions, Baker compared today's market to that of 30 years ago. "We're currently at the lowest levels of construction in 30 years, even though the economy's a lot larger than it was 30 years ago and the population's a lot larger than it was 30 years ago," he said. "We clearly have a lot of catch-up to do in terms of where we should be."

Roosevelt's New Tower Adds Sizzle to Chicago's Skyline

Savvy architecture buffs tend to view look-at-me buildings with a wary glance. All too often, these designs are slick packages, not real places that Roosevelt Tower2ennoble our daily routines. Anybody who's witnessed the cacophony of shrieking skyscrapers in Dubai knows that.

Still, there is reason to think that Roosevelt University's striking new $123 million tower in downtown Chicago (left) will amount to something more than an eye-grabbing envelope.

The 32-story tower, which flaunts a zig-zagging silhouette and an equally arresting skin of blue and green glass, represents Chicago's latest innovation in skyscraper design. It is a vertical campus, stacking everything from a student union to lecture halls to dorm suites within a single, all-encompassing structure.  Read more

Builder In Hell

A builder dies and reports to the pearly gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says, "Ah sorry, you're in the wrong place."

So the builder reports to the gates of hell and is let in. Pretty soon, the builder gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts making improvements. After a while, they've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and the builder is a pretty popular guy.Noah & Construction

One day God calls Satan up on the telephone and says, "So, how's it going down there in hell?" Satan replies, "Hey, things are going great. We've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this builder is going to come up with next."

God replies, "What??? You've got an builder? That's a mistake! He should never have gotten down there; send him up here." Satan says, "No way. I like having a builder on the staff, and I'm keeping him."

God says, "Send him back up here or I'll sue."

Satan laughs uproariously and answers, "Yeah, right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"

loseWho Wants To Lose A Customer?
 - It's Easy!

I know I've ranted about this before, but it's really one of my biggest pet peeves.  Key to any business's success, in good times and bad, is retaining customers.  It's been shown that it can't cost up to ten times as much to get a new customer than it does to retain an existing customer.

The average company is able to achieve between a 71% and a 74% customer retention rate.  Is that good or bad?  Bad.  Even at that retention rate, that same company takes roughly 3.5 months to replace the sales of the customers that it lost.

By comparison, the top 5 companies in any industry have a 93-95% customer retention rate.  In other words, if you want to be long term successful, you have to retain your customers.

Okay, how do you do that?  Why do most customers leave?  For a lower price, right? Nope.  According to the Database Marketing Institute, only 15% to 30% of customers are price sensitive.  The other 70% to 85% are loyal customers who provide most of the profits.

Harris Interactive reports that as much as 86% of customers leave due to pathetic customer service.  RightNow Technologies broke things down even further:  73% stop doing business due to rude staff, 51% due to incompetent staff and 55% said their issues were not resolved in a timely manner.  Kristin Zhivago of Zhivago Management Partners said it another way, after thousands of customer interviews:  "You stopped caring about me."  It gets better.  The White House Consumer Affairs Administration reports that 13% of unhappy customers will usually tell 20 other people about their dismal experience.  Imagine 20 more people learning about your poor customer service.  Just wait until it gets online.

The good news is that you can fix it.  Improve your customer service experience.  Invest in training your people.  Do not tolerate bad or " I really don't care" attitudes.  Get rid of those with the wrong attitudes and hire those with the right attitudes.  92% of lost customers will return if they receive an apology or see an improvement in customer service.  Or, you can just let your competition scoop up your lost customers.  See, I told you it was easy.

fiveFive Tips To Keep Customers Happy

A happy customer is a return customer. And courting return customers is easier on the bottom line then expending resources always searching for new customers. But small blunders can send even the most loyal customers to the competition without even a wave goodbye. A little upfront time spent improving your customer service approach will save the headache of trying to repair damaged customer relationships.

Respond to Emails and Phone Calls

A company that quickly returns customer phone calls has an edge in building customer loyalty. Trust exists when customers know their concerns and questions are taken seriously. A customer that trusts a business is more likely to continue purchasing from that business and recommending it to others.

Honor Appointments

There is nothing quite as frustrating for a customer than scheduling an appointment with a business or service provider only to be kept waiting. Or worse yet, to be stood up. Remember, customers may need to take time off work or juggle other appointments to meet with you. If you are detained, plan to be no more than five minutes late and call to let the customer know you are on your way. Reschedule when necessary, but do so with 24 hours notice so the disruption to the customer's schedule is minimized. Keep appointment rescheduling to a minimum and make sure the client has a consistent contact when scheduling appointments.  Read more

Finland's Glass Igloos

Finlands Igloos

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear "igloo" is ice, but not to the people of Finland.

Located just outside Finland's Urho Kekkonen National Park is the Hotel Kakslauttanen in Igloo Village. The igloos here are made of glass, giving guests an unobstructed view of the magnificent northern lights at the right time of year.

Regardless how cold it may get, the thermal glass used to construct these igloos never frosts or gets iced up, therefore ensuring a warm and cozy interior with a crystal clear panoramic view to the outside world.  Read more

duckYou Can't Send A Duck To Eagle School

If you're going to climb a tree would you rather hire a squirrel or train a horse?

What you do is find the best people you can find Can't Send A Duck To Eagle Schooland empower them to do whatever it takes to satisfy the customer. "You can't send a duck to eagle school." You can't teach someone to smile, you can't teach someone to want to serve, you can't teach personality. What you can do, however, is hire people who have those qualities and then teach them about your products and teach them your culture.
