KONE Coffee Filters Make a Perfect Cup
KONE3

Earlier this year, Sherpa Mechanical Designer, Nate Ginzton, partnered with Keith Gehrke and Matt Higgins from Coava Coffee to perfect a one of a kind metal coffee filter intended to brew an extraordinary cup. The final product, named the KONE, is now helping the team at Coava serve up some of Portland's finest coffee at their Roastery and Coffee Bar, located at 1300 SE Grand Avenue.

Designed specifically for Chemex carafes, the KONE is made from a sheet of stainless steel with photo-etched holes and a single laser-welded seam. The filter touches the carafe only along the top edge of the cone, forcing the water to flow evenly through the grounds, for a very even brew. The photo-etching process creates a taper in the holes, so they are smaller on the inside and bigger on the outside. The outcome is less clogging and a filter that is easier to clean.

The project began on Gehrke's kitchen table in November 2009. Sherpa's Ginzton worked with Coava through multiple iterations to perfect the shape of the cone and the etched hole pattern. Nate created the models and drawings and coordinated the manufacturing of the cones with an East Coast supplier. The KONE is tentatively scheduled to be released for retail purchase in late October.
