Celebrate 150 Years of Land Grant Excellence with George H. Cook

George H. Cook
A young George H. Cook

In 1862, Congress passed the Morrill Act, and President Lincoln signed it, creating the system of land-grant colleges that opened higher education to the working class.

George H. Cook, along with fellow Rutgers College professor David Murray, successfully lobbied the New Jersey legislature to have Rutgers designated as the state's land-grant institution. This established Rutgers Scientific School in 1864, whose name became at various times the College of Agriculture, the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Cook College and now the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.

Whatever the name, our sincere appreciation goes to Congressman Justin Smith Morrill, President Abraham Lincoln, George H. Cook and David Murray, scores of leaders of the school and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, and thousands of alumni and stakeholders who have contributed to New Jersey's legacy of land-grant excellence.

You can learn more about the Morrill Act and Rutgers' role in New Jersey at the 150th Anniversary website.

Fifteen students took advantage of a new summer course, "Severe Weather Field Trip," tracking storms through 20 states and traveling more than 6,700 miles. The course is taught by Steven Decker, assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences, whose teaching portfolio includes several meteorolgy classes, including Weather Analysis and Forecasting and Weather, Climate and Television. The students encountered severe thunderstorms, a wall cloud (a typical source of a tornadic funnel), and an actual tornado ... from a safe distance of 10 miles.

An account of their trip appeared in Rutgers Focus magazine, written by Steve Manas. You can read his report here.
