April is packed with news and events on the G.H. Cook Campus. To help bring them to life more vividly, we have gone to a new format, beginning with this issue of the Discovery Initiative newsletter from the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. We hope you like the new look; please let us know your thoughts by emailing discovery@aesop.rutgers.edu. And, as always, visit www.discovery.rutgers.edu to learn more about our programs and to register for events. |

Professor Ehrenfeld Urges Increased Self-Reliance for Students, Educators
To an overflow audience at the spring Executive Dean's Distinguished Lecture on "Reinventing the University for the 21st Century," David Ehrenfeld of the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources proposed a return to life skills education -- in addition to traditional learning -- as a means of preparing students for a new world that will be created by the end of cheap energy and evolving global climate change. He posited that land-grant institutions like Rutgers are ideally positioned to lead the way to greater self reliance by offering certain practical courses designed "to give us understanding and control over our lives and the feeling of being able to take care of ourselves."
His lecture was featured on Page One of the Daily Targum. To read its take on the professor's talk, link to the article here. |

Be sure to come to
Ag Field Day @ Rutgers Day
April 28, 2012 - Rain or Shine
We look forward to seeing you at this annual highlight of the academic year -- Ag Field Day @ Rutgers Day. Activities start at 10 a.m. and go on until 4 p.m. The annual plant sale, animal handling competitions, demonstrations, lots of food (including homemade ice cream!) and fun make this an ideal family day. Be sure to stop by the Dean's Tent at the corner of Dudley and College Farm roads to chat with your favorite deans and, perhaps, win some prizes. |
