February 10, 2011, 6 p.m.
Susan Solomon

Susan Solomon is a senior scientist at the Earth System Research Laboratory at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She is internationally recognized as a leader in atmospheric science, particularly for her insights in explaining the cause of the Antarctic ozone "hole." Her current research focuses on issues relating to both atmospheric chemistry and climate change.

Please join us for this dynamic presentation, which is part of the Ecologies in the Balance year-long seminar series to examine possible solutions to sweeping and unprecedented global environmental, social, and economic challenges and to explore the opportuntiies for intervention that these changes represent. Discovery Tour: Rain Barrels and Rain Gardens
March 16, 2011, 10 a.m.
Rain Barrel

Rain barrels and rain gardens are great tools for promoting water conservation, reducing stormwater runoff, and minimizing mosquito breeding conditions. The Water Resources staff at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension office in Monmouth County will conduct a training session on how to build rain barrels and rain gardens. If you choose to build your own rain barrel, rest assured that the finished product fits on the backseat of most passenger cars.

The cost to attend the event is $15, which includes lunch and snacks. For those participants who want to build a rain barrel, there is an additional cost of $45 for materials.

For more information and to register, visit our website, or contact the Office of Community Engagement at [email protected], or 732-932-2000, ext. 4205.

Rutgers Students Harvest Produce at Giamarese Farm for Food Banks

Rain - and the threat of possible thunderstorms - didn't deter a contingent of students, faculty and staff from taking part in the ancient practice of gleaning at Giamarese Farm in East Brunswick in late October.

More than 20 enthusiastic gleaners from the G.H. Cook Campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, spent the morning in the fields, harvesting 60 baskets of peppers in a patch that had been set aside by Jim Giamarese for the event. The green, red, yellow and multicolor peppers were in prime condition, prompting one of the participants to observe that they could have been in the produce department at Wegman's. Instead, they were destined for area food banks, including Elijah's Promise and the Franklin Food Bank.  Read more here.

In the season of giving and thanks, the Office of Community Engagement was particularly proud to partner with the Alpha Zeta Fraternity and Farmers Against Hunger  for this event.
