FROM THE SUBMISSIONS MAILBOX

Each month we spotlight one submission to the Submissions Mailbox. This September enjoy the first 500 words of Eliza Tilton's successful submission!

About Eliza:
If Eliza's not crunching numbers at her day job, or playing Dragon Age 2, again, she's writing. You can find her eating lots of pizza on Long Island where she resides with her hubby, son and snuggly pitbull.

Title: SOUL SPARK
Genre:  YA CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE
First 500 words:

The scent of lilies always reminded me of her, and every month I placed fresh ones in front of the headstone. I blew out the candle I lit every visit and stared at the engraving, wishing it would disappear, thatit would all just disappear.

The cemetery was small. Ray wanted something more lavish, but Mom wanted to be buried near Dad which made sense. She even planned the whole thing. What woman plans her funeral? But then again she wasn't like anyone else I knew. No matter what happened, she always smiled and made our place a home. Home. She took that word to the grave. She was my home.

Pink tinged the sky, reminding me of the hour. A sudden breeze blew through my thin shirt and whipped frizzy curls into my face. I shuddered, blew a kiss into the wind, and walked to the only thing that still gave me joy.

I trailed my fingers along the Mustang and opened the car door. Every time I slid into the leather-racing seat, the pounding in my head faded and then disappeared within the sound of bass pumping from the stereo. The 'stang growled as I turned the ignition. The nearby caretaker scowled and I waved. It wasn't my fault this baby had a V8 engine.

I still needed to go to the market before it closed. A new duty I inherited after Mom passed, but I didn't mind having an excuse to stay out of the house. Harold's Market was a local store. Mom bought all our groceries there; she really believed in supporting community business. When Mom died, the owner sent us homemade meals for a week. Most of it landed in the garbage. I couldn't think of eating, especially something from his store. It reminded me too much of her.

At this time of day, the lot was pretty packed. I hated parking near other cars, even if that meant I had to walk a few minutes. Luckily, the back had a few open spots, far from straying carts and people who didn't know how to correctly open a car door.

The automatic doors opened before me. My arms hugged my chest from a non-existent chill. Every time I walked into this store, part of myself crumbled and fluttered down an aisle. Visions of her smelling the melons and testing eggplants to see which one was the lightest flooded my mind. She always cooked with fresh vegetables. Canned and frozen didn't exist in her vocabulary.

Stop thinking and get dinner. Grabbing a box of macaroni and cheese and a pint of Ben & Jerry's, I hurried to the counter, leaving the faded memory behind.

"Hey, Jessica." Tara Goodwin stood by the register wearing a green apron and smacking her lips.

"Hey," I said. Tara was the town gossip queen--and I couldn't stand her.

She scanned my two items while cracking her gum."That'll be $8.75."

Requests: Partial from Krystal Wade of Curiosity Quills and Full from Lindsay Ribar.

SCBWI CONFERENCE WRITE-UP
A YALITCHAT premium membership doesn't just give you access to a community; it also provides you with the opportunity to apply for grants supporting your writing. Member Lynn Dickinson recently attended a conference funded by our CONFERENCEAPALOOZA GRANT and has shared her experience with us below...

On April 17th, I sat down at my desk, opened up my email file, and grinned big. That's the day that C. Lee McKenzie let me know that the YALITCHAT Grant Committee had decided to award me a partial tuition grant to attend the International Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) in Los Angeles in August.

The conference took place in Century City - four miles from my home - the weekend of August 3rd-5th and I attended all three days.

I was, and still am, extremely grateful to #YALitChat for providing me with the opportunity to have this incredible experience, so I thought I'd write and share some highlights with you.

First, I prepared. My agent (the awesome Louise Fury) and I reviewed the list of publishers and editors who would be presenting sessions at the conference. We ruled out the ones who had already passed on my current manuscript, and decided to focus on getting permission to submit from three specific publishers - provided they were looking for projects like mine (middle grade fiction). In two cases, I also had to ask if they were okay with receiving submissions that had previously been passed on by their parent companies. Gulp!

I used the mobile guidebook app provided by the conference to download the conference schedule and faculty bios onto my iPad. I flagged the faculty members I hoped to meet in person so I would remember who they were when the big day came.

My first surprise upon arriving at the conference was how BIG it was. There were 1,234 children's writers and illustrators there from 46 states and 15 countries. I had lunch with a writer from Palestine, then sat next to a writer from Hong Kong during the next round of presentations. I met children's book writers and illustrators from Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, Ohio, Missouri, California, Florida and Malaysia. We exchanged cards and hope to keep in touch. There were plenty of publishers, agents and editors on hand, too.

My second delight came in the realization of how smart, funny and kind the people are who write, illustrate, publish, and represent books for children. The presenters were all extremely funny, and often poignant. Without exception, the faculty members I met and spoke with were generous with their time, advice, and experience.

The keynote speeches (there were lots of them) were brilliant. Authors shared about their struggle to write while raising young children, or to keep going in the face of rejection after rejection after rejection. They rallied us to find, value and trust our own unique voice and to surround ourselves with a community of supportive allies. We were told to "write the story that only you can tell." And "The only thing that can stop you ... is stopping." Publishers demystified their processes for us and explained why even the best manuscripts may be reluctantly rejected. (It sometimes has more to do with the publisher's mandates, schedule, marketing strategies and budget than any of us could ever know - so don't take it personally!) I found myself inspired and eager to get home and write. I love that feeling!

When the three long days were over, I was exhausted but glowing. I've been writing like a fiend ever since - so the inspiration alone was worth the effort of attending. I was able to meet and secure permission to submit from the three publishers that I'd hoped for; Louise is kindly planning to submit my manuscript this week. Please keep your fingers crossed (or as Louise, who is from South Africa says, "Hold your thumbs"), for me.

I live-tweeted from the event itself, as did several other attendees. I used the #YALitchat hashtag as much as possible, and everyone used #LA12SCBWI. Take a look at that info if you'd like to see a more complete roundup of tweets.

I sincerely appreciate #YALItChat for providing me with the grant that allowed me to attend the SCBWI conference and I encourage all YALITCHAT members to learn about the grants and other opportunities available through membership. It's a great value.
GROUP SPOTLIGHT: EXPERT RESOURCES
Have you explored every inch of YALITCHAT.ORG? There might be a group that you've missed. This month we want to spotlight Expert Resources, the group for all members to crowd-source the details that make the difference.

Let's say you have the perfect idea for a courtroom scene. You're writing some brilliant description and dialogue when suddenly you realize you need to know how the situation would be handled in a real court setting. You check online, you go to your research librarian, but the details you're looking for aren't there. Or, you want to be sure your scene between two scientists who are discussing DNA is technically accurate, but you can't find the details you want in professional journals or textbooks. Now what?

Fortunately for YALITCHAT members we have a group of Experts who have first hand, real life experience and exactly that kind of information plus much more and from different
fields. All you need to do is ask.

What if you're new to this publishing business? The Experts are not only lawyers and scientists, but also those who are whizzes at marketing and promotion--those who have
been in the business for a while and can give you answers to things like: "What do I do if two agents want to rep me?" (A terrible situation, right?) Or, "I haven't heard back in six weeks from a request for a full. What should I do?" Do you need to check a bit of Spanish or French or Korean dialogue for accuracy? The Experts are here.

Not only is it great to have this resource at YALITCHAT, it's great to be one of those that others can turn to to ask questions. How exciting it is to see a book on the shelf with
accurate details that you provided.

Join and contribute. Ask questions and receive the answers you need. We need you. Find out more at the Expert Resources group.
