MEMBER NEWS

February sees three new members of the the Submissions Mailbox Panel (formerly Agent Mailbox)!

Welcome to Nicole Langan of Tribute Books. Nicole graduated from Marywood University and time spent as an associate editor for a local magazine before setting up a publishing company - in of all places - Archbald, Pennsylvania - where she was born and raised. She loves the behind-the-scenes process of creating your book cover, formulating an attractive layout for your pages, coordinating blog tours to announce your book launch - that's what gives her a thrill.

Nicole says the best part of her job is "when you see your book for the first time on Amazon.com or when you read your first positive review. I love to see people realize a dream they thought to be impossible."

Tribute Books celebrates its 8th year in 2012 as an independent publisher for independent writers. It provides e-publication and book promotion for writers with an entrepreneurial spirit. Tribute Books is currently accepting young adult manuscripts for ebook publication in 2012. Submission requirements are available on their website.

Welcome to Heather Howland of Entangled Publishing. Award-winning young adult author Heather Howland began editing in the legal, industrial, and technical sectors eight years ago while working as a Production Manager. She has since honed her fiction editing skills as a freelancer and as the former acquisitions editor of a small romance publisher. Heather regularly hosts craft chats and teaches editing workshops for various organizations. She holds a BS in creative writing and psychology, which she channels into her love of dark, romantic fiction. Find her on Twitter at @HeatherHowland.

Heather loves all subgenres of YA, especially darker, twisting plots with a literary voice, and contemporary YA reminiscent of Stephanie Perkins and Jennifer Echols. In adult romance, she enjoys Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Lora Leigh-style contemporary, accessible sci-fi, quirky fantasy, and unique paranormal series that present fresh takes on familiar tropes such as best friends to lovers, love triangles, heroes falling for their best friend's forbidden little sister, and tight-knit groups (Navy SEAL teams, fire departments, roommates, brothers, etc.). While she'll look at anything with a fantastic voice, Heather generally avoids cozies, urban fantasy, historical, hard sci-fi, high fantasy, shifters, zombies, and Plain Jane heroines.

Finally, welcome Jill Corcoran of the Herman Agency. With an English degree from Stanford University and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from The University of Chicago, Jill has marketed everything from sneakers to cereal at Leo Burnett Advertising, LA Gear, Mattel, and at her own consulting company, LAUNCH! New Product Marketing. Jill is also a children's book author and poet.

Jill accepts e-mail queries only, no snail mail, for Chapter Books, Middle Grade and Young Adult books. Please email your query plus the first 10 pages of your manuscript to QueryJillCorcoran@gmail.com.

To see what Jill is currently looking for please see her blog here: http://www.jillcorcoran.blogspot.com/p/jills-publishers-marketplace-page-i.html

Jolene Perry's NIGHT SKY, featuring a teenage boy who feels like his whole world is crumbling around him when his father leaves his mother for another woman and his girlfriend leaves him for another guy; and he thinks he's found a distraction in a fling with a teenage Native American girl and soon realizes that she's anything but a distraction, to Nicole Langan at Tribute Books, for publication in March, 2012, by Lauren Hammond at ADA Management Group.

Printz Honor author A.S. King's REALITY BOY, in which an infamous reality TV child star, now a damaged teenage boy, meets a girl who forces him out of his angry shell before they run away and send their dysfunctional families a list of demands that must be met in order for them to come back, to Andrea Spooner at Little, Brown Children's, for publication in Fall 2013, by Michael Bourret at Dystel & Goderich Literary Management (World English).

Lauren Conrad's collaborator on the #1 NYT bestselling L.A. CANDY trilogy Nancy Ohlin's THORN ABBEY, pitched as a modern paranormal retelling of Daphne Du Maurier's REBECCA set at an exclusive boarding school, in which a shy new student falls in love with a mysterious boy whose dead, perfect ex-girlfriend may not be so dead (or perfect) after all, to Annette Pollert at Simon Pulse, in a two-book deal, by Lydia Wills and Nora Spiegel at Lydia Wills (world).

French rights to Erin Bow's PLAIN KATE, to Scholastic, by Celeste Fine at Folio Literary Management, on behalf of Emily van Beek, in association with the Michelle Lapautre Agency.

World French rights to Erin Bow's PLAIN KATE, to Alice Editions, by Celeste Fine at Folio Literary Management, on behalf of Emily van Beek, in association with the Michelle Lapautre Agency.

Book Releases - Now Available

Submissions Panel members Tribute Books have two new releases: Just released this January, THE PRIEST AND THE PEACHES by Larry Peterson.

It's a humorous historical fiction novel set in the 1960s in the Bronx as five newly orphaned siblings try to stay together as a family. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll cheer. You can't help rooting for the Peach kids.

UNTIL NEXT TIME: THE ANGEL CHRONICLES BOOK 1 by Amy Lignor. How does a girl choose between the one who steals her heart and the one who owns her soul?

Matt and Emily were created for a specific job. Raised and trained as the ultimate angel/warrior team, they are sent down to save, defend, judge and forgive, depending on the 'life' they've been assigned. What they don't realize is that the power of human emotions, such as love, anger, passion and fear can take over even the best of souls, causing them to make  mistakes and follow paths that lead to confusion and heartache.

From murder to redemption, this angel/warrior team must find a way to keep the faith they have in each other in a world
that's ripping them apart.

Wild At Heart Anthology Contest

Editor: Delilah Devlin
Publisher: Diamond State Romance Authors
Deadline: April 1, 2012

Editor Delilah Devlin is looking for stories for a special project to benefit the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge.

Recently, six Diamond State Romance Author chapter members spent a weekend falling in love with the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge and its exotic inhabitants. The refuge is home to large cats and a variety of exotic animals that would otherwise have to be put down because they aren't suitable for placement in zoos or to be returned to the wild. The need for financial support was apparent. Our chapter decided to pool its resources and find a way to help.

What we propose is to produce a volume of short stories, all centred around animals in need of refuge. All proceeds from the sales of the book will go directly to the Turpentine Creek Refuge. We will edit the submissions, seek professional cover art and formatting, and assist the refuge by uploading the anthology to online bookstores like Amazon's Kindle store and Barnes & Noble's Nook store. Additionally, we will help upload the book to CreateSpace so that printed volumes can be available for sale in brick-and-mortar bookstores throughout Arkansas and inside the refuge's shop.

This is a national call for submissions of short stories to be donated for the cause. Only the best stories will be accepted. All genres of fiction (contemporary and paranormal, sweet adult romance and Young Adult) will be considered. Please keep in mind that stories must be PG-rated as the book will be two-sided-one side geared toward adult readers and the other toward teenaged readers.

Examples of the kinds of stories we seek:
  • A maimed Iraqi war veteran learns to accept his disability by working with equally damaged animals
  • A teenaged girl helps a were-cougar hide his true nature while both hunt for an escaped cat
  • A teenaged couple encounters a tiger escaped from its private owner's cage and work together to find help to capture and care for it
  • A pushy animal psychic must gain the trust of the refuge's veterinarian to help a depressed bear
  • A troubled teenager discovers a tiger living in a national forest, then seeks a way to prevent locals staging a hunt from killing it
How to submit: Prepare your 1,500 to 4,000 words story in a double-spaced, Arial, 12 point, black font Word document with pages numbered (.doc, NOT.docx) OR rich text format. Indent the first line of each paragraph half an inch and double space (regular double spacing, do not add extra lines between paragraphs or do any other irregular spacing). US grammar (double quotation marks around dialogue, etc.) is required.

In your document at the top left of the page, include your legal name (and pseudonym if applicable), mailing address, and 50 word or less bio in the third person to: dsrawildatheart@gmail.com

If you are using a pseudonym, please provide your real name and pseudonym and make it clear which one you'd like to be credited as. Authors may submit up to 2 stories.

About the editor: Ms. Devlin has published over one hundred stories in multiple genres and lengths. Her published print titles include Into the Darkness, Seduced by Darkness, Darkness Captured, Down in Texas, Texas Men and Ravished by a Viking. Her short stories are featured in Zane's Purple Panties, and Cleis Press's Lesbian Cowboys, Girl Crush, Fairy Tale Lust, Lesbian Lust, Passion, Carnal Machines, and Dream Lovers. She is published by Avon, Kensington, Harlequin, Atria/Strebor, Ellora's Cave, Samhain Publishing, and Berkley. In Fall 2011, she debuted her first anthology with Cleis Press, Girls Who Bite.

Direct any questions you have regarding your story or the submission process to Delilah at dsrawildatheart@gmail.com.
