| October 2010 | | Team Washington Update | |
| Welcome from Patti Brooke, Assistant Director, Business Services |
 |
Welcome to our October newsletter. You will see as you read through this newsletter we have been extremely busy on all fronts: trade, tourism, economic development and grants management. September brought with it the 10-day mission to Asia that Director Weed and Mark Calhoon joined. Mark led the complex efforts to execute a successful mission on behalf of businesses in Washington. The industry focus of the mission was aerospace, clean energy, technology and tourism. Overall there was great relationship building, many connections made and now continued conversations occurring in the follow up. The focus areas of the mission were: FDI (foreign direct investment), smart grid technology opportunities in China and connecting Washington aerospace companies to Asian market opportunities. Some quick stats from the mission: 109 mission participants; 62 organizations of which 26 were for-profit company representatives; and 21 company meetings organized by Commerce. Overall, there was a fantastic amount of effort put into the mission by a number of people and the results have been extremely positive thus far.
The state export initiative remains a top priority for this division. Our goals at the state level are:
1. To increase the number of Washington companies exporting by 30% in 5 years.
2. To directly assist Washington business to achieve $600M in export sales through export
assistance programs at WSDA and COM over 5 years.
3. To increase general statewide exports by approximately 45% to over $100B per year by
2015.
There is a lot of work underway to set up this program and continue to promote the value of exporting.
You can read in detail below about the accomplishments of the Business Services Division last month. As always, I welcome your questions and comments about our work here. Sincerely, Patti Brooke

Tourism
Washington State Tourism Industry Summit State government budgets are suffering due to the economy and as a result, state tourism programs are impacted. The challenge for our state is especially serious. Once again, Washington ranks among the bottom three states in tourism funding and the threat of further cuts by the legislature likely. Given the current vulnerable dependence on the state general fund, the state could lose all funding for state tourism efforts.
Private sector tourism industry representatives from across the state are currently working with Commerce to discuss new funding models to sustain tourism. With a $14 billion per year industry and nearly 150,000 jobs at stake, this group is highly motivated to find a model that will create ongoing and stable funding to market Washington as the travel destination of choice. On October 29th a summit meeting organized by tourism industry leaders will held at the Doubletree Hotel Seattle Airport to share potential strategies and models for consideration by the legislature and Commerce. Contact Marsha Massey for more information on the summit.
Tourism Hosting Journalists from France, New Zealand, Denmark and the U.K. In partnership with the Port of Seattle and Seattle's Convention and Visitors Bureau, tourism hosted five travel journalists from France from October 12-17th with resulting coverage potentially reaching 2.5 million French consumers in the following months.
Pamela Wade, the Vice President of New Zealand Travel Communicators and the "2009 Writer of the Year" by Cathay Pacific Media Awards will tour the state from October 10- 24th.
Six journalists from the United Kingdom toured the state in a media familiarization tour in partnership with the Port of Seattle and the Seattle Convention and Visitor's Bureau the first week of October. The resulting coverage from the FAM tour could reach over 3 million readers in the U.K. |
