fireworksTotal rainfall in the Houston area was less than normal in 2010. We ended the year with 42.72 total inches which is 5.12 inches below normal. If you take a closer look at this rainfall, we had 12.92 inches in July making it the fourth wettest July on record. October gave us .02 inches of rainfall, making it the fourth driest October on record. With such extremes we could see our landscapes show signs of stress as we enter 2011. We will keep a close eye on the situation and keep you informed. Click here for a graph of our 2010 rainfall.

Landscape Notes

We will begin pruning Crepe Myrtles in January. Pruning is a practice that aids in shaping the trees, removing any undesirable branches and  removing any dead or damaged wood. For many years Crepe Myrtles have been horribly disfigured in the pruning process when their canopies are chopped off leaving bare nubs on trunks and main limbs. This practice is not only unhealthy for the tree but becomes very unsightly as huge knuckles develop where the cutting is repeated each year. Pruning a plant is analogous to a person getting scratched, and the scratch heals. But a cut becomes a permanent scar, and amputation causes deformity. Crepe Myrtles should be allowed to maintain their natural form with minimal pruning. The rule of thumb when pruning is anything smaller than the size of a pencil is ok to remove. The trees will have stronger branches and will bloom just as profusely in the spring. There are many different opinions on the practice of pruning Crepe Myrtles and the industry standard changes from time to time. Consult with your Account Manager if you have any further questions.

In December, the temperatures were warm during the beginning of the month for winter seasonal color. However, the seasonal color is all doing good. Our crews will be visiting all properties with seasonal color to continue to monitor their progress, pinch dead blooms and maintain the beds. As we start a new year, there is still a potential for freezing temperatures. In general pansies and snapdragons are very hardy and can tolerate our winters extremely well therefore they shouldn't need to be covered.
