Welcome to our second installment of Passport ® Picks! We've put together this list to highlight some of the activities that are taking place in March, April, and May. Pack up the car, grab your Passport®, and explore the parks this Spring!

Passport® Picks for Spring
- National Mall and Memorial Parks. This year the National Mall in Washington, DC celebrates 100 years of cherry blossoms. In 1912, over 3,000 cherry trees were donated in the name of the city of Tokyo. Every Spring, the city and it's memorials come to life with the pink hues of the cherry blossoms. The festival will be held March 20 through April 27. Find more information here.
- Homestead National Monument of America. In 2012, the nation celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Homestead Act of 1862. The act provided the opportunity for citizens to claim and settle on land that was previously public domain. You can view the act at Homestead National Monument between April 25 and May 28. - Clara Barton National Historic Site. Honor the life of one of the most well-known women in American history. Celebrate the life of Clara Barton with free events at the 100th anniversary of her death. More information available here.
- 150th Anniversary of the Civil War. Explore the second year of the Civil War with events at various parks. Explore the Battle of Pea Ridge (March 9-11, costs vary) or the Battle of Shiloh with free events at the park (April 4-8). You can also commemorate the Confederate withdrawal from Pensacola at Gulf Islands NS or head to Colonial NHP for Civil War Weekend at Yorktown Battlefield. Both parks require an entrance fee.
- Dayton Aviation Heritage NHP. Fly over to Dayton Aviation Heritage NHP and find out about Those Wonderful Winged Women! Learn how courageous female pilots opened up the world of aviation to women. This event is free. Details are available here.
- De Soto National Monument. You thought the parks were just for people? Bring your furry friend to Dog Days at De Soto on March 10 for activities and demonstrations promoting safe and healthy dog visits to the park This event is free. Details can be found here.
- Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Former first lady Lou Henry Hoover joined the Girl Scout movement in 1917 and was involved for the rest of her life. Herbert Hoover NHS will offer a day of education and activities to children in sixth grade or above. Girl scouts and their families are especially encouraged to participate, but all are welcome. This event is free. More information is available here.
- Lowell National Historical Park.Lowell Women's week is a celebration of women, past and present. Explore their influence through art exhibits, luncheons, a concert, and other events and activities. The cost varies by activity. The event schedule is available here.
- Chesapeake & Ohio Canal NHP. Join us for the ribbon cutting ceremony at Ferry Hill Plantation! It will take place at 11am and is a free special event. Enjoy living history, exhibits and music. Click here for more information.
- Memorial Day Events. Celebrate Memorial Day by exploring our parks! Minute Man is offering a free concert featuring the US Air Force Band of Liberty at 2pm, Tuskegee Airmen is hosting it's annual fly-in, and New River Gorge is holding programs on water safety. Or you an find a park near you!
