National Public Lands Day is a National Environmental Education Foundation Program.  Last year, 170,000 volunteers removed trash, built and maintained trails, and planted trees, shrubs, and other plants in federal, state, and local public areas.  Events take place throughout the year as well.  A calendar of events can be found here.
