Maria's Voice

My first night at HAWC was the first time in over 6 months that I was able to lay my head down and actually close my eyes. During my duration at HAWC I was able to create a life-plan, filled with goals and ambitions which enabled me to give my children and myself a life to be proud of.

Before I left HAWC, I was given the opportunity to volunteer [at a local church] as an assistant for the preschool teachers. I was ecstatic during the summer of 2008 when I received a phone call offering me a paid position as a preschool teacher! I taught for three years, and just recently resigned so I can focus on my education. I am in my last year at the University of Houston and will graduate this month with a degree in education.

My many heartfelt acknowledgments go to the staff that helps abused women find a "place" in society. The biggest leap I took was walking out - not knowing where I was going, or how I would get there. My hope is that all women who suffer from abuse know that while the transition is difficult, the outcome is well worth the rough terrain and untraveled journey.
Thank you, for all that you do. My abuse will always be a part of my past, but overcoming it is what led me to my future.

In Honor of

Our 35th Anniversary, Houston Area Women's Center Proudly Presents:

Four Songs in the Key of Love

In honor of our 35th anniversary, the Houston Area Women's Center will present an engaging drama, Four Songs in the Key of Love at the Wortham Center of Performing Arts. Written, produced and directed by award-winning playwright, Thomas Meloncon, exclusively for the Women's Center, this play will address breast cancer, sexual assault, domestic violence and AIDS. This one night only performance will celebrate the beauty and meaning of womanhood, through dramatic monologues, modern dance, hypnotic songs from great entertainers and compelling original stories. Each riveting character will weave a story of their delicate walk from childhood to womanhood - facing domestic violence, sexual abuse, breast cancer, illicit love and finally triumph.

Join us on Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. for an entertaining evening, inspiring personal healing and community bonding. For ticket pricing, sponsorship opportunities and additional information, visit www.hawc.org

THE TEEN EFFECT:

The Dynamics of Teen Dating Violence

Come join the Houston Area Women's Center Trainers on July 21 from 8:30am-4pm to learn more about teen dating violence, how to prevent it and how to help others. This training is designed for both adults and youth and divided into two separate workshops: specifically for each age group.

The goal of this training is to raise individual awareness about teen dating violence, teach healthy relationship skills and prevent the devastating cycle of abuse. By working together we can highlight teen dating violence as a major issue in our communities and reinforce the need for prevention efforts!
