Hydrocoast Map of the Pontchartrain Basin is Released by LPBF
LPBF released its Hydrocoast map online for the first time. The Hydrocoast maps are intended to give timely updates on the hydrology of the Pontchartrain Basin. The map illustrates river inflows and the most recent distribution of salinity across basin. Maps for July and for February are now available online.
The MRGO Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Report and Environmental Impact Statement were posted online by the Corps on July 27. This report is the Corps' plan to restore wetland damage caused by the MRGO. The public comment period is open until August 27, but we are applying for a 30-day extension. Of note, the Corps will complete the Chief's Report and EIS, but no further action is recommended because a non-federal sponsor has not been identified. The state has challenged the Corps' requirement that the project cost should be shared with the state rather than paid 100% with Federal funding. While it is good to have an EIS on approx. $2 billion worth of projects, the Violet diversion design is not complete, putting a hold on the marsh creation projects dependent on river reintroduction. LPBF will likely send joint comments encouraging implementation through whatever means possible, including the states' newly approved State Master Plan.
