RESTORE Act
The RESTORE Act (The Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourism Opportunities and Revived Economy of the Gulf Coast Act) has passed by a large majority in the House of Representatives and in the Senate. This act outlines how Clean Water Act penalties, owed by BP Oil as mitigation for the effects of the 2010 oil spill, will be distributed. The act states that 80% of the penalties will go towards restoration in the gulf coast, provide resources to the Gulf Coast to begin economic and ecological recovery immediately, establish a Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council and a Comprehensive Plan for the Gulf Coast and establish a the Gulf Coast Centers of Excellence for Ecosystem Restoration Science, Monitoring and Technology. The act also outlines how the penalty funds will be allocated across the five affected Gulf States. The future of the RESTORE Act depends on an agreement being reached between the House and the Senate as different versions were passed in each.
See video about the RESTORE Act from Senator Mary Landrieu.

Manatee in Lake Pontchartrain
 | |
Manatee migration routes from Florida
|
Manatees are spotted on an almost yearly basis in Lake Pontchartrain, especially in June, July and August, feeding in shallow waters in the grass beds and rivers on the north shore. Manatees are indanger from boat strikes so boaters should be aware of when and where manatees are likely to be in Lake Pontchartrain and alter boating activity accordingly. During the summer, boaters should be wary for manatees and slow down when moving into shallow areas where manatees are likely to be.
