Bonnet Carré Spillway

Since the closure of the Bonnet Carré Spillway on June 20th, the sediment from the Mississippi River has been slowly falling out of Lake Pontchartrain's water column, making the Lake more clear.  However, plenty of river water still remains in the Lake.  Salinities are still as low as 0.4 per thousand (ppt) throughout the Lake, whereas a salinity of at least 4-6 ppt would be normal for this time of year.  The Lake is also still full of the Mississippi's nutrients.  With the sediment now falling out of the water (and plenty of summer sunlight), we are anticipating that algae will begin to bloom rapidly in the Lake.  In past openings it has taken about 2 months to see the bloom that would place the bloom in August.  However, we are on the lookout!  Please call LPBF at 836-2239 or e-mail william@saveourlake.org if you are out on the Lake and see green "slime" on the plants or floating in the water.
