Ziegler Interviewed by San Diego Public Radio Station Concerning OxyContin Use
Stephen Ziegler | Professor Stephen Ziegler was contacted last week by KPBS, San Diego's National Public Radio outlet, to discuss OxyContin abuse in San Diego County, Calif. It was reported in a local newspaper that the number of teens who overdosed on the drug did not match the resources that are being devoted to the problem. Local law enforcement agencies felt the criticism was misplaced, and cited reporting data from the medical examiner that they said did not properly synthesize information about teens and OxyContin. Ziegler states, "...deaths have been linked, not necessarily caused by OxyContin; if (one learned) the number of deaths that could actually be traced to OxyContin, the actual number would be extremely small..."
Ziegler is an associate professor in the Department of Public and Environmental Affairs at IPFW. KPBS chose him for the interview after reading a paper about OxyContin he coauthored in 2002; the segment aired Aug. 3 on the program These Days.
