UUCF Hosts Interfaith
Conference on LGBT Welcoming
Fri., Oct. 19, 7 p.m. and Sat., Oct. 20, 12-9 p.m.
How can people of ALL faiths grow in inclusiveness and love for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people? Learn how at this conference sponsored by People of Faith for Equality in Virginia and UUCF.
The event kicks off with Friday Movie Night, showing " An Ordinary Family." Workshops on Saturday include: "Raising Our LGBT Children," "Religious Response to Bullying," "Faith-based Advocacy" and "What Sacred Texts Say."
After worship and a fellowship dinner on Saturday evening ( register for dinner by Oct. 15), Zach Wahls, author of "My Two Moms," will sign copies of his book and speak. Pledge Update. It's common for pledge payments to drop off in late summer and fall, creating a temporarily tight cash flow situation. This year is no exception, so if you have not yet paid anything toward your 2012-2013 pledge, a contribution now would be a great help. Thank you.
Flower Donors and Arrangers Needed. If you would like to sponsor our beautiful floral arrangements one week in honor of a special occasion or loved one, please click here or sign up on the bulletin board outside the Kitchen. "Refuting Intolerance - UUs' Unique Opportunity (but are we brave enough?)" Sunday Forum - Science, Reason & Religion. Sun., Oct. 14, 12:30 p.m., Chapel. Facilitated by Smith Wood. Much intolerance (and consequent social injustice, hatred and wars) arises from "divinely dictated or inspired" dogma. As members of a religious organization that does not require belief in dogma, UUs have a unique opportunity to promote religiously based tolerance. But are UUs willing to refute religion-based intolerance? Can we achieve our objectives without being overly confrontational?
"Spirituality/Unitarian Universalism. What is Faith?" Adult Programs Course. Oct. 14 and Nov. 4, 4-5:30 p.m., Program Building. Facilitated by Intern Minister Sarah Lenzi. Register at ap@uucf.org. These stand-alone but interconnected book discussions explore how UUs might understand the term "faith." Oct. 14: "Faith" by Sharon Salzberg; Nov. 4: "The Courage to Be" by Paul Tillich. Annual Fire Drill is Coming. UUCF will conduct our annual fire drill during worship services and RE one weekend in October. In preparation for the drill, please familiarize yourself with evacuation guidelines for the Sanctuary and Program Building. Being a UU Parent. Adult Programs Course. Sundays in Oct., 4-6 p.m. Facilitated by Kathleen Garces-Foley. What does it mean to be a UU parent? How do we understand and support what our children are learning in UU RE? We'll discuss the challenges of sharing our values with our children and integrating UUism into our family life. Note: This course is not a support group.
Drumming for the Spirit, Drumming for Peace. Sundays, 3-4 p.m., Sanctuary. Suggested donation: $1-10/session. Our drum circle is led by percussionist, Kofi Dennis. Kofi hails from Ghana and has performed all over the DC area, including the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap. His engaging rhythms and storytelling inspire. Bring your own drum or use one provided.
"Introduction to Yoga." Adult Programs Course. Eight Sundays, Sep. 30-Nov. 18, 4-5:30 p.m. Facilitated by Bess Matlock. Is yoga exercise? Religion? Science? This course is an introduction to the practice of yoga. Each week we'll explore yogic philosophy, pranayama (breath techniques) and asana (postures). Open to all levels of fitness and all ages. Come for all eight classes, or drop in. Wear comfortable clothing and please bring a yoga mat and blanket.
"The Gift of Years." Adult Programs Course. Tuesdays, Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30, 7:30 p.m., Program Building. Facilitated by Joy Hatfield and Sandy Myles. Register at ap@uucf.org. Are you about to retire or have you already? Do you know the difference between "aging" and "eldering?" It's time to consider this gift of years you've been given! Sandy and Joy will help you learn from your past experiences, relationships and mentors and discuss how you can become your "authentic self" to provide the most meaning to you, your family and your community.
Preventing Falls in Your Home and Community. Adult Programs Course. Wed., Oct. 17, 1:15-2 p.m. Facilitated by Jennifer Edge, Fairfax County Independent Living Project. Would you like to learn about preventing falls that could harm you or an elderly parent? Falls are one of the leading causes of injury for people over the age of 65. This session discusses things you can do to increase safety in your home and community. The Independent Living Project offers educational seminars, fitness classes, and home visits for older adults.

A memorial service for long-time member Nancy Hughes will be held Sat., Oct. 20, 9 a.m., UUCF.
Long-time member Carrol Karr died last week in San Francisco, where she had moved three years ago to be near her son. A service will be scheduled later this year.

Youth & RE
Youth Fall Con.* Oct. 19-21, Towson UU Church, Towson, MD. For high-school-aged youth. Several UUCF youth are planning to attend. Registration deadline: Oct. 12. Online registration. In addition to registering, please let Helen Rose know you're attending so she can plan for chaperones and drivers. *At cons, or youth conferences, UU youth in the Joseph Priestley District of the UUA gather for a weekend of worship, sharing and growing in intentional community.
UUCF Haunted House. Support UNICEF and our Youth Leadership. Sat., Oct. 27, 3-4 p.m., Chapel. Bring your children and their friends, ages 3-12. UUCF teens decorate and run the event. Donations go to UNICEF. Treats provided.
RE Teachers Roundtable. Let's Talk! First Roundtable dates: Sun., Oct. 14, 8-9 a.m., Chapel, and Mon., Oct. 15, 10-11 a.m., Linnea Nelson's office. RSVP to Linnea. Teaching RE is an incredible journey that allows us to deepen our own faith, develop a clearer understanding of children and youth, and explore ways to effectively present lessons that encourage thoughtful discussion. Both roundtables to focus on this question: "How do I create space for developing viewpoints/theologies in my class?" Suggestions for alternate meeting times and topics welcome. Powering a Bright Future. Adult Program Course. Sun.,Oct. 21 and 28, 4 p.m. Facilitated by Dillon Ginley. Register at ap@uucf.org. This two-session Northwest Earth Institute discussion course explores issues related to energy use and what we can do to take action as individuals and communities to promote energy sustainability. This solution-based course encourages discourse on energy production and extraction, peak oil, fossil fuel subsidies, energy efficiency, equity, energy policy and environmental impacts.
"A History of Space Flight: A Major Aspect of the Cold War - Part I." Global Affairs Discussion Group (GADG). Tue., Oct. 23, 7:30-9 p.m., Social Hall. Presenter Jack Sheahan, retired from NASA, covers events from the first decade of the 20th Century up to the late 1950s with the Cold War, Sputnik and the establishment of NASA. Contact Randy Adams .
"Classics of Unitarian and Universalist Theology." A Drop-in series for youth and adults. Adult Programs Course. Oct. 28, Dec. 2, Jan. 20 and Feb. 24, 4-6 p.m., Program Building. Facilitated by Rev. Laura Horton-Ludwig. Read the texts and related sermons before the class and then gather to discuss them as a group. This year focuses on 19th Century Unitarians and Universalists. Readings average 30-40 pages per session. Texts available online or through the UUCF office. Oct. 28 session: Hosea Ballou's, excerpts from "A Treatise on the Atonement" (1819). RSVPs appreciated but not required.
Reproductive Justice Workshop - It's About More than Choice. Adult Programs Course. Sun., Oct 28, 4 p.m. Facilitated by Susan Bennett. Register at ap@uucf.org. Reproductive justice - the right to have children, not have children and to parent the children we have in safe and healthy environments - is based on the human right to make personal decisions about one's life, and government's and society's obligation to create the conditions where these rights can be exercised. This workshop addresses: What reproductive justice is and why it's important, why responding to this issue as people of faith is vital, the role of men in reproductive justice, why focusing on individual choice is inadequate, how LGBT people can maintain their reproductive rights, how sexual assault and child abuse affect reproduction and how racial and economic justice intersect with reproductive justice.

UU Humanist Group. Nov. 5, 7:30 p.m., Sanctuary. Guest speaker Dr. Cliff Andrew, founder/chair of the UU Church of Annapolis Skeptics Freethinkers Agnostics and Atheists previews his book, "Six Principles: Towards a Community of Humanistic Naturalism." He will also share his thoughts on the future of nonbelievers in Unitarian Universalism.
Second Annual UUCF Couples Enrichment Retreat. Nov. 10-11. Reston. Led by Zimri Putney, Sc.M., Pathwork Helper, mindfulness therapist and longtime UUCF member and teacher, and Tehila Selzer-Putney, Ph.D., clinical psychologist, with over 30 years working with couples and individuals. $250 per couple with 20% donated to UUCF. All couples have unrealized potential for deeper intimacy, warmth, pleasure, communications and more tenderness, compassion and loving kindness. In this two-day experiential retreat you will have the opportunity to work with your partner to create these rewards. Come celebrate with UUCFer Bob Rudney as he marks National Disability Employment Awareness Month with the launch of his novel, "Lovers Lame." Refreshments served.
