Taking Courage Takes Many Forms

Mary Katherine Morn
Parish Minister Rev. Mary Katherine Morn
"Take courage friends.
The way is often hard, the path is never clear, and the stakes are very high.

But take courage friends, for deep down, there is another truth.
You are not alone."

This benediction, by my friend and colleague, Wayne Arnason, is one of my favorites. Take courage friends. I love to say that at services. I can say it with utter conviction.

This is because over and over again in my years as a minister I have watched people take courage. I have seen many of you step away from the comfortable and familiar and build a new and better life. I have seen you face unimaginable loss. I have seen you try something you thought you could not do. I have seen you stand up for what you believe in, even as you risk much. I have seen this and more. Taking courage.

As we consider the theme of courage this month, we realize how many forms courage takes. Though some acts of courage are dramatic, most appear rather ordinary on the surface. What takes courage for some is simple for another. Courage is all over the map.

What has intrigued me is the question of where we find courage. And in this, I would love to have your help. As Sarah and I prepare to preach on courage next weekend (Sarah on Saturday and me on Sunday), we would like to hear from you. Where do you find courage in your life?  You may comment here or send me an email.

Even if you do not share your thoughts with us, I hope you will consider this question. Where do you find courage in your life?
