Announcements
for
Sep. 19-26

Dear UUCF Members and Friends,
Parish Minister
Rev. Mary Katherine Morn

Do not miss this last chance to participate in a Focus Group with the Board. The board has worked hard to create an exciting vision for our future.  They would like to share it with you and hear your thoughts on how we can grow in fulfilling our mission.

This week's focus group meetings are scheduled for: tonight, Sep. 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the Commons, Sat., Sep. 22, at 5:30 p.m. in the Music Room; and on Sun., Sep. 23, at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the Music Room. Thank you for bringing your vision and voice to the table.

This weekend is also the deadline for registering (at UUCF) to participate in this year's Complete the Circle project, benefiting Our Daily Bread. On Sunday, October 21, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m., people from many Fairfax congregations and organizations will gather near George Mason University to form a "people picture." Last year 68 people from UUCF joined in this effort and had a load of fun.  Please see either Ruth Reagan or Barb Brehm at the sign up tables in the Commons after services this weekend.

As you probably know, this is a holy time in the Jewish religious year. We are in the middle of the Days of Awe, a period of reflection, repentance, and renewal.  This weekend our services will honor this observance and explore what we might learn from this ancient practice. After Saturday's worship service we will hold our first polylogue to continue the conversation. This will be a facilitated discussion for those interested in sharing their own and hearing others' thoughts on the sermon topic.

See you in church.

Yours,

Mary Katherine

Jerry Poje gives a brief review of topics covered in the Spring '12 series, and overview of the Fall '12 series in an "Introduction to the Sunday Forum: Janus - Looking Back to Look Forward." Then Hadrian Katz speaks on "First Amendment Law." Establishment and free exercise of religion and, for that matter, the right to bear arms have been disrespected and distorted in ways that have narrowed the rights of women, GLBTs, atheists and others. While the Supreme Court as currently constituted is unlikely to improve things, it would be useful to discuss strategies for bringing the law into better alignment with liberal UU principles.
