Small Groups: Saving the World, a Few at a Time

Laura Horton-Ludwig
Associate Minister Rev. Laura
Horton-Ludwig

Just this weekend I had the privilege of spending some time with a newly forming small group here at UUCF. Folks who had known each other casually for years, even decades, now found themselves with an opportunity to get to know each other more deeply. It was great to see the smiles and nods of recognition as stories were shared and connections made. Conversations like this can change us forever, transforming acquaintances into friends and beloved fellow travelers on the road of life.

This is what Mary Katherine and I wish for all of you: that every single person at UUCF will be able to find a small group to belong to here, a place where each of us can be deeply known, loved, and challenged. Small groups are where our work to grow, connect, and serve really comes alive. We want this for everyone, including you.

That's why this coming weekend is all about small groups. Our worship services will explore the power of small groups to make a difference in our lives. Immediately after the services, we're hosting a Small Group Signup event in the Commons. All are welcome to talk with our facilitators, peruse the schedules, and sign up for a group. We'll have signups and information available for:

  • Covenant groups: small groups who gather monthly for "intimacy and ultimacy" -building caring relationships and exploring life issues in a spiritual context.
  • Groups for people who share a common theological orientation - e.g., Christian, Humanist, and Meditation Practice groups, as well as Women's Spirit Circles.
  • Support groups. Currently we offer men's and women's groups, a simplicity circle, and support groups for parents of children with special needs and for people with relatives struggling with mental illness.
  • Discussion groups, including book groups and current affairs/science discussion groups.
  • Social groups for people who like to have fun and explore common interests together.

If you can't make the services but would like to sign up for a small group, please contact me. Hope to see you there!

--Laura

P.S. to our parents of high school students: this past weekend I visited each of our high school classes to hear their thoughts on small groups (we watched a clip from the classic teen film The Breakfast Club and talked about groups, stereotypes, and peer pressure) and invite them specially to come to worship this coming weekend. I'm hoping this will be just the first of many opportunities this year for Mary Katherine and me to engage our youth as members of our worshiping community. We hope we can count on your support!

2011-2012 Contributions to Needs and Organizations outside UUCF

Each year we tabulate how much UUCF congregants give to needs and organizations outside UUCF. The following chart shows how much was given and to what cause or entity during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012. The $184,791 total represents 14.2% of total funds spent, down slightly from the prior year, primarily because of higher international disaster donations in 2010-2011.
