Prophetic Words & Deeds: Oh, the Audacity!

Because of those who came before, we are;
In spite of their failings, we believe;
Because of, and in spite of, the horizons of their vision,
We, too, dream.

Summer Minister John Monro
These lines, from a benediction by Barbara Pescan (collected in Kathleen Rolenz's wonderful new book, "Sources of Our Faith"), speak to the power of prophetic words and deeds.

On the one hand, audacious demands for love and justice - the meat and potatoes of
prophets in all ages and everywhere - are a challenge to those in power who support
or tolerate injustices of all stripes. But they also are a challenge to future generations,
goading us to seek broader horizons and new levels of audacity.

In this latest installment of our six-part series on the sources of our Unitarian Universalist
tradition, I will explore these dynamics by reflecting on my recent visit to Israel and
Palestine, where I encountered a paradox of
prophecy: Peace activists, on both sides of
the conflict, who claim to have no hope and yet whose audacity knows no bounds.

As usual, stick around after services for another Summer Polylogue, an opportunity to

share insights with your fellow congregants.

Happy Anniversary,
Mary Katherine!

This month marks 25 years of ordained ministry for our Parish Minister, Rev. Mary Katherine Morn. We will celebrate with her on the weekend of Sep. 15-16.

We hope you will share your reflections of her ministry and how it has touched your lives. Please send any reflections to Carol Jensen. Note cards will also be available in the Commons after services if you'd like to write a note. All thoughts will be compiled for her in a special way.

We will also be creating a timeline of events for Mary Katherine. If you have a particular event you think should be included, send the date and a brief description. You may also include a photo or other memento. There will be a place to leave your photo's near the artwall if you would like to drop them off after services.

Please submit reflections, notes, mementos and/or photos no later than Aug. 25.
