Direct Experience ... Of What?
 |
Summer Minister John Monroe
|
This coming weekend we will continue our exploration of the six sources of the Unitarian Universalist tradition, with a focus on direct experience. This is probably the most difficult source to describe, but it might very well be the lifeblood of our tradition.
According to our list of sources, direct experience refers to that "transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces that create and uphold life."
Sounds a bit esoteric, doesn't it? But really it's not. I suspect many of us have moments when we feel a sense of oneness, a sense of connection with something beyond ourselves: Sitting down to dinner with family or friends, listening to the chorale during worship or walking alone in the woods. Those are experiences of transcendence.
Without a doubt, we are fortunate to draw upon a variety of religious and humanist teachings that offer different ways of understanding transcendence. But for many of us the power of those teachings ultimately comes from our own experiences, however mundane or ambiguous they might seem.
Don't take my word for it: Stick around after services for another Summer Polylogue, an opportunity to share insights with your fellow congregants.
