Reception Honoring Natalie

Natalie Fenimore
This Saturday after our 4:30 p.m. service, we will honor our Minister of Religious Exploration Natalie Fenimore
 and her contributions to our community. In August, Natalie will become the called Minister of Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church in Camp Spring, MD. Join us for a reception to thank Natalie for her years of service to the children and youth of UUCF.

"A Summer's Day"
A Vespers of Memory

Start your weekend with reflections on one summer day presented by UUCF's Memoirs Writing Group. Join more than a dozen members and friends who will explore an entire summer's day, from dawn to twilight, through stories. Joanna Walker and Judy Gallimore will perform musical reflections. A reception follows the service.

The UUCF Annual Meeting will be held a week from Saturday following the 4:30 p.m. service.  Click here to see the meeting agenda, minutes from last year's meeting, slate of candidates for the Board and Nominating and Endowment committees, and the budget and operating plan. You are encouraged to familiarize yourself with these documents, attend the meeting and vote on the business of this Congregation.

UUCF Grounds Cleanup. Sat., Jun. 2, 8 a.m.-noon. Help remove weeds and invasive plants, do a little pruning or picking up sticks (just like when you were a kid). And speaking of kids, bring them along for a lesson in practical gardening. Bring sturdy gloves and tools for cleaning out the beds or pruning. Don't have the tools? Come anyway. We have them! Drumming for the Spirit, Drumming for Peace. 
Sundays, 3-4 p.m., This week in the Library. Suggested donation: $1-$10/session. Our drum circle is led by percussionist, Kofi Dennis. Kofi hails from Ghana and has performed all over the DC area, including the Kennedy Center and Wolf Trap. His engaging rhythms and storytelling inspire. Bring your own drum or use one provided. Register your Children for Summer RE and Sign up to Assist. Curriculum for age 2-rising 6th graders: Our Partner Church experiences in Puriang, India, and Szentgerice, Transylvania. Curriculum for rising middle and high schoolers: Based on Carl Sagan's book, "Cosmos." Parents please signup to assist at the Teacher Board in the Commons after services.

 

UUCF Humanist Group Meeting. Jun. 4, 7:30 p.m., Chapel. The group will discuss the results of the survey that is being sent to our mailing list. The survey will deal with the group's desired activities, structure and suggested topics for fall meetings. Contact Ira Hamburg or Mary Bellamy.

LGBT Pride Movie Night. Fri., Jun. 8, 7 p.m., Sanctuary. In celebration of Pride Month, Equality UUCF presents the Academy Award-winning film, "Milk," starring Sean Penn. "Milk" is the story of Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay elected official, and his fight for gay rights. Popcorn and refreshments available. Reserve child care by Jun. 3 at ap@uucf.org.

Support the LGBT Community and Show Your UU Pride. March in the Capital Pride Parade - Sat. Jun. 9, 4-7 p.m., starting at 22nd and P Sts., NW. (carpooling info to come later); and/or volunteer at the Pride Festival - Sun., Jun. 10, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., along Pennsylvania Ave., between 2nd and 7th Sts., NW. Since June 1970, the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people gather once a year to support one another and vividly demonstrate, with pride, their demand to be treated with dignity and respect. This year, UUs of DC, MD and VA and the Washington Ethical Society are joining forces to bear witness to "the inherent worth and dignity of all people." Summer Camp Week at UUCF. Jul. 9-13, Arts Camp - ages 6-11, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Includes music, art, dance, photography, culinary arts and more! Registration: $225 ($250 after Jun. 15)STAR! (Summer Theater Arts for Recreation) - ages 12-18, 3-9 p.m. Includes musical theater workshop with Rosemary Salvi, with final production on Fri., Jul. 13. Child Dedications - Father's Day Weekend. During worship services on Sat., Jun. 16, 4:30 p.m., and Sun., Jun. 17, 9:15 and 11:15 a.m. If you are interested in having your child dedicated, please click here or contact Rev. UUCF Family Picnic and End-of-year Celebration. Sun., Jun. 17, 12:30-2:30 p.m. UUCF Campus. A fun event for the whole family, including obstacle course, sno-cones and more. UUCF will provide the hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, drinks and utensils. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Volunteers needed for setup, grilling and cleanup. Summer Youth Retreat. Sign up by Jun. 15! Aug. 24-26, Camp Henlopen, Lewes, DE. Open to rising 9th graders through graduated seniors. Cost: $85 per youth includes lodging (separate male and female dorms), food and transportation. Additional fee for kayaking. Scholarships available; chaperones attend free. Activities include beach time, games and campfires with s'mores. Sign up online. Adult chaperones, meal helpers and drivers needed. Contact Helen Rose.        

 

Great Books Discussion Group (GBDG). Mon., Jun. 18, 7:30 p.m., Room 11. Discussions explore the meaning of "classic" books. Stop by any month. Just read the selection before the meeting! Social Justice Coordinator/Minister. UUCF is seeking a 10-hour-per-week Social Justice Coordinator/Minister to identify and recruit new social justice leaders and activists in the Congregation; communicate social justice activities to the Congregation on a regular basis, coordinate Congregation-based activities and themes across a wide range of groups and interests and represent UUCF to the larger community. PFLAG is a support group for Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and FLY (Fairfax Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning Youth) is a support and social group for youth ages 12 (with parental permission) to 19.
