City Unanimously Adopts Project Downtown
On Tuesday the Wichita City Council unanimously adopted Project Downtown: The Master Plan for Wichita. For more than a year, the community provided input at multiple public meetings, working with Boston-based Goody Clancy that developed the plan based on input and market analysis.
"The City Council's leadership of and commitment to this process has been impressive," said Larry Weber, Wichita Downtown Development Corporation Chairman. "Together with Mayor Brewer, they have been at the table listening to the public input, asking great questions and ensuring our economic future."
Project Downtown is a 20-year blueprint for the future of Downtown Wichita. According to the plan, there is a potential market demand of $500 million in projects from private investors, including residential, hotel, retail and office space. The plan also outlines a potential $100 million for public investment in areas such as parking garages, parks, and street landscaping to support the private investment.
"Working with the private sector through the Wichita Downtown Development Corporation and Visioneering Wichita, our community came together to say this is important to them," said Mayor Carl Brewer. "In order to compete for people and jobs, we must have a vibrant, great city core and this plan helps guide us on how to build on what we have."
In addition to the Wichita City Council, the Metropolitan Planning Commission also unanimously adopted the plan and the Wichita Area Association of Realtors, Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce, Go Wichita, Visioneering Wichita, the Board of Park Commissioners, Wichita Transit Advisory Board and Young Professionals of Wichita all endorsed the plan.
