Champagne and Chocolate Event Fundraiser: Scottish Rite. 332 E. First. 263.4218. 6pm. A fundraiser event benefiting the Wichita State University RiteCare Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic. The money raised will go to help children in need who could not otherwise afford Clinic services. A live auction you will not want to miss with renowned and entertaining auctioneer Jeff Sowder will take place later in the evening. Tickets are $40 per person, $75 per couple, and $300 for a table of 8.

Zora Neale Hurston: Queen of the Harlem Renaissance: Central Library. 223 S. Main. 261-8500. 10/10/10. Flamboyant and outspoken, Zora Neale Hurston joined Langston Hughes and other black writers in Harlem to create a renaissance of African American culture in the 1920s. Her work was forgotten until the 1970s, when she inspired a new generation of black writers. Hurston shares her stories, her life's joys and tragedies, in this dynamic presentation. Historically reenacted by Dr Carmaletta Williams, Johnson County Community College.

Black Towns: The Nicodemus Story: Central Library. 223 S. Main. 261-8500. 10/13/10. 1:30pm. Eatonville, Florida setting for "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and Zora Neale Hurston's hometown, was not the only black town established in the late 1800s. Nicodemus was also formed as an African-American city in Kansas in 1877. Angela Bates, historian for Nicodemus Historical Society, will share more about the history of Nicodemus and contrast it with other post0Civil War racial colonies.
