Call for AAP Awards Nominations

Thank you to all who submitted AAP Awards nominations for 2011.  Deserving leaders in the academic PM&R community were selected from an outstanding pool of candidates and will be announced at the 2011 AAP Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

In an effort to improve the AAP Awards selection process, a new policy was passed that requires the Leadership Development and Recognition Committee to select award recipients for the following year at the Committee Meeting that takes place each year at the AAP Annual Meeting.  The LDRC would like to solicit additional AAP Awards Nominations for the year 2012, in particular Distinguished Member and Distinguished Academician nominations, prior to the upcoming selection meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.

Please note: AAP Awards nominations received in 2009 and 2010 will remain in the pool of candidates for 2012 AAP Award selections so there is no need to resend nominations, although please feel free to send an updated CV for the nominee, if applicable.

Visit the AAP website for nomination instructions and award descriptions, including the new McLean Outstanding Resident/Fellow Award; and, to view past Award recipients

Nomination deadline is April 4, 2011.

ISPRM Research Survey

The International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) is interested in collecting information about research infrastructure and research activity in PM&R departments and hospitals around the world. The ISPRM Research Committee has developed a survey on this topic and requests that members of the AAP complete the survey (one per unit/department/facility). The survey deadline is May 1, 2011.

Take the ISPRM survey.

Important Department of Justice Press Release Re:  ADA

The Justice Department on February 22, 2011 announced a settlement under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), a private, non-profit organization that administers the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), a standardized examination related to medical licensing.   Under the terms of the settlement agreement, NBME is committed to providing reasonable testing accommodations to persons with disabilities who seek to take the USMLE, in accordance with the requirements of the ADA.   In addition, it will grant Frederick Romberg, a Yale Medical School student, the accommodations of double the standard testing time and a separate testing area to take the USMLE.The AAMC has released a new publication that provides medical educators with resources to work with students who have disabilities. The book reflects a more current view of what constitutes a disability and provides practical guidance on how to assist medical students from admission to graduation.
