We are accepting applications for the 2011 Program for Academic Leadership (PAL) through November 30, 2010.

PAL is a three-year program led by Michael O'Dell, MD, that develops academic leadership skills in junior PM&R faculty. The goal of PAL is to provide a basic administrative framework and skill set to promising physiatric academic faculty to enhance their leadership abilities within a department.

Ossur Prosthetic/Orthotic Research Grant Application Criteria and Conditions
The Foundation for PM&R is offering a new Ossur Prosthetic/Orthotic Research Grant, generously funded by an unrestricted gift from Ossur Americas.  The Foundation is now accepting applications.  One grant of $10,000 will be made. All applications must be postmarked by November 1, 2010.

Criteria:
  • Award is a grant for research on applications of prosthetics/orthotics in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation.
  • Applicant and/or at least one co-investigator must be members of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) and/or the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP).
  • The project must focus on medical rehabilitation using prosthetic and/or orthotic devices.
  • Special consideration will be given to applications focused on outcomes research.

2011 McKnight Technological Innovations in Neuroscience Awards

The McKnight Fund for Neuroscience supports innovation research designed to bring science closer to the day when diseases of the brain can be accurately diagnosed, prevented, and treated.  Letters of intent for the Awards describing a new technology that you propose to develop are being accepted through December 1, 2010.  Up to three awards are made annually, each providing $100,000 (per year) for two years.  Funding begins August 1, 2011.

Kessler Foundation's Joel A. DeLisa, MD Award for Excellence in Research and Education in the Field of PM&R
Call for Nominations
The new Joel A. DeLisa Award seeks to identify and reward the physician or scientist who has demonstrated a significant impact on the field of PM&R, particularly as it relates to the translation of research and education to patient care.  One annual award will be presented in the amount of $50,000.

Deadline for receipt of nomination and all application materials, including CV and two recommendation letters is December 15, 2010.

Standards for Stroke Specialty Programs
Feedback Requested
The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) recently convened an International Standards Advisory Committee to revise and update the standards for stroke specialty programs.  The proposed standards will be published in the 2011 Medical Rehabilitation, Aging Services, and CARF-CCAC Standards Manual.

Your input and feedback is critical to the creation of standards that will advance the field.  Complete the field review and submit comments by Sunday, October 31, 2010.
ACGME Approves New Standards

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has approved a set of requirements that are a comprehensive approach to patient care, quality improvement, supervision,
 professionalism, transitions in care, and resident well-being.  Graduated standards for duty hours for the nation's 111,000 residents in training in ACGME accredited teaching institutions are included.  The new standards will go into effect July 2011.
