Come to the 10th Annual Youth Fishing Fun Day

2010 Youth Fishing DerbyBring the Family for a Day of Fun!
On June 2, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge will hold its 10th Annual Youth Fishing Fun Day. Youths 15 and under can pre-register for the event or register at the pond on June 2. Registered participants will receive a free t-shirt, a lunch ticket (hot dog, soda, and chips), a door prize ticket, and other "freebies." On the same morning, Blackwater will also hold its 11th Annual Frog Jumping Contest. Participants can bring their own frogs and compete for prizes. Visit our Youth Fishing page for details about registering and participating on June 2.
Three Chicks on the Blackwater Osprey Cam

Three osprey chicks Check Out the Youngsters
We are thrilled to announce that we now have three newly hatched chicks on the Blackwater NWR Osprey Cam. The chicks hatched from May 21-25, and so far all the chicks look strong. Sometimes the youngest doesn't always make it, but last year we had three chicks fledge from the cam nest, so we're hopeful all three chicks will prosper this nesting season. Be sure to visit the Osprey Cam page to follow the action.
Volunteers Plant Almost 5000 Grass Plugs

Marsh Planting Helps Restore Habitat
Marsh plantingPickering Creek Audubon Center recently sponsored a marsh planting event at Blackwater NWR where volunteers planted almost 5000 grass plugs near the photography blind along the Wildlife Drive at the Refuge. Much thanks to all those who helped to restore an acre of wetland habitat at Blackwater.
Earth Day Litter Pick-Up a Success

Earth Day Litter Pick-UpVolunteers Pitch In

In mid April, 14 volunteers picked up 42 bags of trash -- including 10 tires, 1 toilet, and 1 car bumper in and around Blackwater Refuge. We greatly appreciate the volunteers who come out each year to help tidy up the Refuge. Not only does it improve the view for our visitors, but it makes the roadways safer for animals that are often attracted to the road by litter.
