Help Friends Win Fuel for Education Program
Vote in Citgo "Fueling Good" Contest Each spring and fall, the Friends of Blackwater help bring Dorchester County students to Blackwater Refuge so they can learn about wildlife and habitat protection while meeting their school curriculum requirements. Buses are used to transport the students, and the cost of fuel can be high, so the Friends have entered the Citgo "Fueling Good" contest, which distributes gas to 24 charities throughout the country. The way the Citgo contest works is that organizations with the most votes will win a $5,000 gas card for their project, so we're asking our supporters to please visit our Citgo contest page and vote once a day until February 9. You can learn more about the contest and the Blackwater NWR environmental education programs on our contest page. Thanks for your help! |
Eagle Cam Has Two Eggs!
Visit the Blackwater Eagle Cam The Blackwater NWR Eagle Cam, which is run by the Friends of Blackwater, currently has two newly laid eggs in the nest. We might see a third egg by the end of Tuesday. This is the eighth season that the Friends have run the live Eagle Cam, which is broadcast from an eagle nest 80-feet high in a loblolly pine tree on Refuge property. The Blackwater Eagle Cam has consistently witnessed at least two eaglets hatching and fledging each season, so be sure to tune in for the 2012 action. |
Marsh Edge Trail Closed Until Summer
Eagles Nesting Near Trail
The Blackwater NWR staff announced recently that they've closed the Marsh Edge Trail at the Refuge because eagles that have nested near the trail in previous years have returned for another season. In order to avoid disturbing the birds, the trail has been closed until the summer, when any eaglets will have fledged.

Visitor Center Renovation Update
Crash-Proof Glass Installed In addition to adding a multi-purpose room to the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center, the latest renovation work also includes adding a beautiful new glass entryway that will give visitors a wonderful view of the marsh. Recent work included installing crash-proof glass in the entryway to help ensure that birds do not mistake the glass for sky. Birds can see a pattern in the special glass that humans cannot, so birds will know to avoid the walls.
