Excerpts from The Referral Minute by Bill Cates.  When you get a referral - whether you asked for it or not - you want to change it into an introduction.  Here are three critical questions you need to be asking:
  1. "How would you like to introduce me?"  E-mail is one of the most efficient methods.
  2. "What do you think you need to say to him to pique his interest in hearing from me?"  Getting your referral source to think about this will help him craft a more effective introduction and give him the confidence to carry it out.
  3. "When do you think you will be able to speak to him so I will know when to follow up with you both?"  Be a little assumptive here, without being aggressive.

Never leave the meeting without knowing who will do what by when.
